Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1327
1805. . Browning-4. PCGS graded AU-50. Mostly untoned. Light silvery gray in hue with delicate luster still adhering and smooth features suggesting that it was carefully maintained all these years. Rims are free of injury. Center, while not 100% sharp are definitely better than many. This issue is often plagued with weak strikes (particularly the two last years, 1806-07).

In modern times, the quarter dollar has established itself as a workhorse in the United States coinage system. It plays a vital role in turning the wheels of commerce, and its annual production routinely tops one billion. By contrast, the quarter was all but invisible during the early years of federal coinage. The United States Mint delayed its introduction until 1796, making it one of the last U. S. coins to debut. Then, after striking just 6,146 examples of that date, the Mint suspended production of 25-cent pieces for nearly a decade, until 1804! (PCGS # 5313) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

1853. Arrows and Rays. PCGS graded MS-64. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Very choice. A frosty, satiny pale toned example with flowing luster on both sides. Nicely struck as well, with all devices well defined, including the eagle’s plumage.

Due to the reduction in the weight of the minor silver coins by the Mint Act of 1853, it became necessary to mark the new coins in some way to allow banks, etc., to distinguish them from the pre-Act silver of the old standard, some of which had been struck in 1853. In a letter to Longacre on February 22, 1853, Mint Director Eckert discussed possible design changes to achieve this: ". One suggestion which has been made impresses me favorably; it is to make a change in the reverse of the half and quarter dollar assimilating them to the dime & half dime; that is introducing a wreath, with the name of the coin enclosed. Such alterations, in connection with arrows at the dates, as you have formerly proposed, might suffice ." Longacre replied on February 28: ". The time allowed by the law, is too short to warrant any elaborate revision or alteration of the present devices. I would therefore respectfully suggest the following changes, to be made on the obverse and reverse, respectively, of the silver coins now in use. On the obverse of the coins I propose to mark the place of the date, somewhat in the manner represented on the next page [that is, with facing arrow heads]. On the reverse, I propose for the half and quarter dollar to cover the space between the Eagle and the inscription with rays radiating from the centre of the piece -- or what in heraldic language is termed a 'glory' ." From this we can credit Longacre with the design changes on both sides of the coins (PCGS # 5426) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

1901-S. NGC graded VG-8. Popular key date. This is the preeminent for the Barber Quarter series and, with a mintage of 72,664 pieces, only the 1913-S has a lower total at 40,000. However, this is somewhat deceptive since the 1901-S is the rarer of the two key issues, by far, and much more infrequently seen in circulated conditions. Mint State examples appear at irregular intervals and it is noteworthy when a specimen at any level of Mint State appears.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1917-D. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Head. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Nice original toning. Superb mint frostiness throughout. Type 1 and Type 2 Standing Liberty Quarters carry a funny, yet thought-provoking story. In the early years of this century a band of vice crusaders stalked the land. America, like most countries, had its history of swings from relatively "loose" morals to more prudish ones. After the infamous reformer, Anthony Comstock, passed on to a higher calling in 1915, his devoted followers continued the crusade. The day Hermon MacNeil brought out his aesthetically pleasing Standing Liberty motif in 1916 was the day a great hue and cry arose from these Comstockers. For what did they espy in his design but a bare-bosomed Ms. Liberty. Forget the fact that countless nations had their own splendid, if unclothed, artwork that had drawn rave reviews from art historians and critics; no, this new topless Quarter had to go! One can imagine Mr. MacNeil's chagrin at being told to modify the offending bosom. Thus arose the so-called Type 2 design. Not only did the artist comply with the Mint official's request, but he went overboard by draping poor Liberty in a highly encumbering chain-mail blouse! Be that as it may, here is a splendid representative Type 1 (bare-breasted) for your appreciation. Pop 115; 21 finer, 3 in 66+, 17 in 67, 1 in 67+ (PCGS # 5709) .

1917-D. Type 1. NGC graded MS-65 Full Head. A nice white coin whose superlative surfaces gleam with almost velvet-like iridescence. Well worth a strong bid since the D and S-ming dates in particular are difficult to find fully struck at Liberty's head.

Lot 1353
1921. NGC graded MS-65 Full Head. CAC Approved. Mintage in 1921 for all denominations excluding the Silver Dollar fell markedly from what it had been in prior years. This was a year of economic difficulty. No doubt resulting from the "morning after" correction from the inflationary drunken spree the country had gone on in World War I. With manufacturing and retailing at a low ebb there was little demand for new coins. Hence, the hard-to-find 1921-dated issues, like the delightful Quarter Dollar offered here.

Brilliant frosty coin. The paucity of pieces made this year may account for the fact that Mint State survivors come better struck than those of most other issues in the series. Whereas many extant Standing Liberty quarters display striking softness through the top of the date, the 1921 exhibits this feature over the bottom of the digits. Finally, both the first and second 1 in the date are slightly different when compared to other issues. The present specimen exhibits all of these features, although the incompleteness of strike on the date is largely confined to the first digit. As alluded to above, the sharp strike is free of criticism. Pleasing silvery iridescence overlays the frosty devices and speaks forcefully for this coin's originality. Pop 20; 9 finer in 66FH.
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,000.
