POSSIBLY UNIQUE MATTE PROOF 1909. SEGS graded Matte Proof 64. This is a highly unusual coin, in 1909 the Philadelphia Mint changed its proof finish to a Roman, or shiny finish. This coin however, is clearly a Matte Finish proof. Perhaps it was some sort of holdover using the old matte finish to produce this coin before the planchets were prepared for the new Roman finish for the balance of the 1909 proof quarter eagles. Obviously this coin is a proof, but the knife rims can not be seen in the SEGS holder, as the plastic insert covers over the entire edge of the obverse and reverse. If indeed this coin is a matte proof, which it certainly appears to be, then it is likely unique. All others of the 139 struck are thought to be Roman finish proofs, which is halfway between the matte proof and shiny proof finishes. We are uncertain of the origin of this coin, and as always we hope all potential buyers will carefully study the surfaces of this unusual coin in order to make their own determination as to just what it is. Perhaps the Roman finish wasn't applied to this planchet, and only the secret ingredients for a matte proof were used, creating what appears to be a standard matte proof surface a year after such coins had stopped being struck at Philadelphia. Certainly a curiosity, and worth careful examination.
We note a faint scratch in the reverse field from the lower left edge of the first T in STATES down into the field below UNITED. One small tick in the field below ES of STATES will further serve to identify this unique coin.
Estimated Value $2,500-UP.

1909 $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-65. Exceptional surfaces for this date, with blazing luster underneath a choice golden tone. As expected, the fields, devices and rims are superb, and show very few signs of handling or contact marks. Boldly struck and appealing. Only 70 coins graded this high by PCGS for the date, with just 13 graded higher, making this one of the top ones known of date.

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. A beautiful coin that boasts coppery gold toning and is well struck on all but the uppermost wing tip of the eagle. The key date to the series, which has long been collected as one of the few gold sets any collector can hope to complete without investing an entire fortune. Pratt's incuse design was a real departure from any coins made for circulation previously, and many did not like it. However, the objections were overcome and these incuse design quarter eagles and half eagles remain extremely popular with current collectors. A triumph for the date collector to purchase, and this piece looks to be at the high end of its grade category.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

Lot 751
1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. The key date to the Indian quarter eagle series, this coin will delight the specialist for its choice surfaces and "strong D" mintmark on the reverse. Many of this date have the "weak D" mintmark, which is, of course, the important feature on the rarest date of the series. Satiny luster on both sides, and well struck on all but the forwardmost wing feathers of the eagle, which show minor weakness. Although many counterfeits exist for this date, they are easy to tell apart, this one possesses the knife rim feature which is visible on most high grade originals. For all practicle purposes only a single die pairing was used according the Breen (the second die pairing struck just 70 coins). Only 55,860 struck, making this the key date to the series, and one of the few gold date sets of anything most collectors could ever hope to complete. Scarce in this grade, the PCGS Population Report shows just 182 have been graded as such, with 146 graded higher.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Another choice example of this highly desirable date. The mintmark is clear to the unaided eye and the surfaces are quite choice. Seldom found in full mint state, and worth a look to see if it would fit into your date set. One tiny copper spot on the eagle's neck, and a few scattered hairlines are noted. Familiar knife rim on the obverse, as seen on all genuine examples of this date. Scarce and desirable.
