Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1140
1851 $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Flashy luster and well struck, but the surfaces show the usual billion or so tiny surface ticks. As the large gold coins circulated, or were passed about in bags and leather pouches, the delicate fields quickly became bagmarked with tiny criss-crossing tickmarks. Finding any early double eagle without these is nearly impossible, as the regular day to day handling seems to have caused the surfaces the quickly be bathed in minor handling ticks. Always popular with collectors, these early Type I double eagles can be had for a song, with very little downside because of the gold content. Loads of history is included for the nominal price.
Estimated Value $700 - 900.

Lot 1142
ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1854-O TWENTIES. PCGS graded AU-50. One of the key dates to the double eagle series, this year saw the mintage top out at only 3,250 pieces. Most of those were lost, spent and remelted into later date coinage. No single specimen exists in mint state, although a handful are close, including this coin. The surfaces show moderate handling marks, as expected for the grade. Boldly struck and full hair details are noted on Liberty's upper curls, while the lower ones near her neck are a bit flat. On the reverse, there is no sign of weakness. As so few are known in high grade, it wasn't difficult to track down this coin. It was last sold at auction by Heritage, March 1998, lot 6507, and just prior to that in the Heritage ANA Sale, August 1997, lot 7821, in both of those appearances the coin graded NGC XF-45.
There is a small planchet flaw extending up at a sharp angle from the center of Liberty's neck, and there is a small tick mark below the CA of AMERICA, which serve to hallmark this coin. Estimates range all over the map for the number known, but a guess would be 50. Of those, this is apparently in the top ten, and compares favorably with the recently offered Harry Bass coin, which was PCGS graded AU-55 and sold for $103,500 in May of 2000.
When reviewing recent auction appearances, we note that the coin offered in Heritage's August 1998 sale, although graded AU-50, had been wire brushed so badly, it wasn't even photographed in that sale. The other coins of comparable quality haven't sold recently enough to bother reporting prices.
If you are a date collector of these important gold coins, then waiting for a better example would likely be a fools game, at best, if you wait long enough, an equal coin may be located. History is against it though, and the astute numismatist knows that it is best to purchase the rare ones when they appear, for they may not be available when you really need one. Bid accordingly if you expect to win the exceptional prize. This one is currently in PCGS holder #5781533.
Estimated Value $75,000-UP.

1855-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Satiny luster and well struck for this San Francisco issue. The surfaces have moderate handling marks, but nothing deep or distracting. One for the date collector who appreciates better than average surfaces and color.

Lot 1144
1859-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Clean surfaces for the grade and very well preserved, considering that this coin was serving its purposes in a rather wild area of the West. The Gold Rush had just passed its peak, and affluent merchants and miners were everywhere. This coin possesses some darker highlights on its devices, as seen on original coins, and would make a welcome addition to a high grade date set. Some luster clings to the fields near the devices, and the surfaces are much cleaner than usually encountered on these large, heavy gold pieces.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,600.

Lot 1146
1860-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-60. Bright and untoned, this gleaming double eagle boasts abundant luster and well struck devices. The surfaces show a number of handling marks, but they are not as heavy as one might expect for the rather moderate grade. Now that the number of 1857-S twenties is known, these other dates which were not found on the S. S. Central America shipwreck should see greatly increased demand.

1883-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-63. One of the finest graded by NGC, we note a mere 34 graded this high with a single coin graded higher in their Population Report. The fields are especially clean on this piece, and we feel this coin is nearly a grade better were it not for a shallow reeding mark on Liberty's chin which is scarcely noticeable. On the reverse, the surfaces are really amazing and must be seen to be appreciated. Certainly a condition rarity, even in choice grades, as very few were saved, and most are heavily abraded by bag handling.

BRILLIANT PROOF 1899 $20 GOLD. PCGS graded Proof 62 Premium quality. Here is perfect example of a victim of modern grading. Proof gold has always been highly regarded by collectors, and no doubt this coin was purchased from the Mint and cherished by a number of collectors for the past 101 years. During that time, the coin was gently wiped with a cloth by some prior owner or owners. This created light hairlines in the fields, and a few minor contact marks can also be seen. However, the devices are still highly frosted and the fields retain their mirror qualities. Placed on a velvet tray, no one has any doubt that this is a lovely proof double eagle, struck during a period which produced some of the highest quality proof gold ever seen. While this may not be in the running for the finest known, keep in mind that only 84 were struck, perhaps half of which escaped into circulation, either being spent by careless, or broke, owners during their first 40 years. This is one of the survivors which can be had at a significant discount to a less hairlined example. View it and see for yourself, most collectors would be proud to own such a coin, despite the rather modest grade. PCGS has only graded 20 examples in Proof, 1 of which is below the grade of Proof-60 (mishandled or circulated). In higher grades their Population Report shows the following: PF-61 1 coin; PF-62 1 coin (this one); PF-63 4 coins; PF-64 4 coins; PF-65 8 coins and a single PF-66. Not many to show for the original 84 mintage. An excellent value in todays market.
