1893-CC. NGC graded MS-62. Light golden toning and frosty. Only 18,402 struck this last year of issue. A lustrous-fresh beauty. Level, rolling luster with splashes of rich gold mingle on the select surfaces. We note an absence of readily identifiable marks on the obverse (which is unusual, and gives this specimen an advantage over others). For its part the reverse is equally attractive, equally lustrous, and endowed with the same pleasing natural color acquired over more than a century. Pop 160; 20 finer, 19 in 63, 1 in 64 (PCGS # 9023) . Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000. View details and enlarged photos Check results on similar lots

1902. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Low mintage date. Only 31,140 produced. Well struck with nice light golden toning.
There are three better date double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint from the early 20th century, the 1902, 1905 and 1906. Of these three, the 1902 and 1905 are the scarcest. A small mintage of 31,140 was all that was produced in 1902 and survivors rarely make it past the MS63 grade. We feel certain that bidding will be intense for this original, choice and undervalued double eagle scarcity
This satiny example does not have the "washed out" appearance seen on the few competing 1902 Double Eagles. Were you to block out the date, you might easily assume this is a 1904 by its swirling luster and serene appearance. We should also point out that the devices are well struck overall with minimal abrasions present, a small mark at the eye, a little depression near the chin. The reverse is equally outstanding for such a rare bird, no pun intended. Only the collector of substance will be able to afford this coin. But it is every bit the masterpiece within its series, a landmark offering, shall we say? Pop 66; 10 finer, 1 in 63+, 8 in 64, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 9041) . Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000. 1908. With motto. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice satin finish coin. Very clean fields. Excluding the normal IN GOD WE TRUST on this piece was not a small matter for President Roosevelt. As early as April 1907, he asked Director Roberts for an opinion. According to Roger Burdette's research: "Roberts replied that it was not required by law, but that the Solicitor of the Treasury said that the motto had been in use for so long that that Congress may have lost the ability to prevent its use." Roosevelt decided to omit the motto anyway all double eagles and eagles issued in 1907 and part of 1908 lacked the motto. This simplified the designs and improved the overall artistic impact.
When the first coins were released in early November 1907, the omission was noticed immediately, however, and commented upon negatively. Within a few days, letters, telegrams, and petitions peppered the President, Congress. Legislation requiring the motto passed Congress and was signed on May 17. After June 17, 1908, all the new design gold coins carried the required inscription.
This is a strongly struck Gem that has booming mint frost and bright as the dickens, the golden aura shimmers off the surface. An outstanding strike as well, few high grade With Motto twenty 1908s are accounted for. A scarce opportunity to acquire this issue in the Gem MS65 grade. Pop 60; 11 finer, 10 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 9147) . Estimated Value $13,000 - 15,000. View details and enlarged photos Check results on similar lots

1908. With motto. NGC graded MS-65. An untoned satiny mint gem. The surfaces are virtually immaculate. While the 1908 No Motto pieces are fairly well spread over the grading spectrum, the opposite is the case with the prized 1908 With Motto strikes. Check out the low census figures below! We report tremendous detail from a very positive strike, which collectors like better to see than halfhearted detail; furthermore, the surfaces show wonderful golden hues. No need to worry about an unsuccessful strike left by the rebound of the dies that coined this -- something that plagues some No Mottos but fortunately is avoided in the With Mottos -- since even a cursory examination of the piece reveals nice clarity of detail, including the centers. Pop 19; 11 finer (PCGS # 9147) . Estimated Value $13,000 - 15,000. View details and enlarged photos Check results on similar lots

1908-S. With Motto. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Lovely golden toning. Only 22,000 struck. A radiant coin of the kind of quality one likes to describe for bidders of this actively collected but seldom seen ’08-S release. Careening satin luster fills the surface and covers all devices effortlessly with a warm golden aura on the frosted surfaces. Struck with systematic exactness throughout.
The 1908-S has a rich history in numismatics, including auction appearances. By 1908, the date of gold coins was incorporated into the master die, with the result that there is no difference among working dies. However, the mintmark (S or D as the case may be) was entered by a hand punch. On the 1908-S offered here the S is located above and slightly left of center of the 0 (1908), between two rays, and tilts slightly to the left (PCGS # 9149) . Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.
