Lot 1986
1842-D. Small date PCGS graded Genuine. Our grade is XF lightly cleaned. In 1842, the Dahlonega mint experimented with date and lettering size. This was part of a period of experimentation at every mint that lasted from 1838 to 1843. The reasons for the frequent, subtle changes on gold coins during this era were most probably related to issues of standardization of design and improvements in strike. The 1842-D Small Date is much more available than its Large Date counterpart (the exact opposite is true on the Charlotte half eagles dated 1842 where the 1842-C Small Date is the rarity) (PCGS # 8210) .
Estimated Value $700 - 750.

Lot 1989
1852-D. PCGS graded MS-61. Boldly struck and needle sharp! Gorgeous greenish-golden luster adds to its appeal. A Premium Quality coin for the given grade. As has been observed before, Dahlonega Mint $5 gold pieces made in the years 1852 to 1856 have a changed appearance than those struck in the preceding years. Most are very weakly struck at the borders and have a distinctive beveled edge. The obverse of this handsome specimen has full detail on the hair below LIBERTY and on the curl below the ear. The stars are very sharp while the border is moderately so except from 5 to 9 o'clock. The reverse is very bold on the eagle and shield including full feet and talons. The denticles are weak from 9 to 10 o'clock but are sharp elsewhere. A decidedly superior specimen for the grade and one well worth stretching a little for to insure its place in your collection. Pop 2; 5 finer, 3 in 62, 2 in 63 (PCGS # 8252) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 9,500.

Lot 1990
1852-D. PCGS graded EF-45 CAC Approved. Light golden toning. Clean surfaces with some residual luster; moderate weakness on the eagle as often seen. The 1852-D is among the more available Dahlonega half eagles. However, it is a much more elusive coin in top grades than such issues as the 1853-D and the 1854-D (PCGS # 8252) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.

1853-C. NGC graded MS-60. Housed in an Old Holder. Only 65,571 struck. Lightly toned with some obverse marks. Soft, serene luster glints off the frosty surfaces of this attractively toned Quarter Eagle from the mint at Charlotte, North Carolina. A blend of shades can be seen on both sides. The strike is better than the usual somewhat spongy look of these on the reverse, though the design elements are not as crisp as would be found on a P-mint issue. Mintmark, while plainly visible, is weak.Pop 7; 19 finer (PCGS # 8254) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1993
1853-D. Large D. PCGS graded MS-61 CAC Approved. Delicately toned. Only 89,678 minted of which merely 350 examples are estimated to have survived. Well struck with appealing light golden-yellow toning. The 1853-D is the one of the more frequently seen Dahlonega half eagles, but fortunately is one that is available in Uncirculated as well and with enough regularity to establish dependable pricing. There may be as few pieces known in Uncirculated as 35 to 45 with most in the MS60 to MS62 comfort zone grade range for collectors. A properly graded Mint State 61 like this is particularly attractive and rare (note the census, which follows). About as fully struck as these are seen, with just outstanding detail in the coronet (with no weakness on the hair braid at Liberty's brow or the hair bun), and just as outstanding detail in the eagle's wings, neck and leg feathers. Vivid golden luster. In short, this is a desirable grade Dahlonega half eagle that is notable for being much better struck than usual, with excellent eye-appeal. Pop 7; 14 finer (PCGS # 8255) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

1877-CC. NGC graded EF-45. Toned. Only 8680 minted of which merely 135 examples are estimated to have survived. Appreciably better surfaces than usual for this date and mint, with smooth features, rims that are free of injury, and pleasing to the eye. The devices are wells truck with perhaps the only softness being noted at the eagle neck feathers. Pop 20; 36 finer: 11 in 50, 6 in 53, 13 in 55, 6 in 58 (PCGS # 8343) .

Lot 2013
1908-D. PCGS graded MS-63+ CAC Approved. Very sharp mint mark. Well struck and choice. When Bela Lyon Pratt's new Indian head motif was launched upon the American waters in 1908, the public was shocked (to put it mildly). Never before in American numismatics had a coin designer broken with tradition in such an overt way as did Pratt. For what Pratt did was to recess the design below the surface of the coin! Forget the fact that his Half Eagles and Quarter Eagles were far more aesthetically challenging than the long-running and tired-appearing Liberty heads they replaced. Unlike his predecessors, Pratt chose to honor a real American Indian for a change, not some made-up Greek goddess wearing an incongruous Indian headdress. And because of this, his design helped to propel American coin design into the World Class league (PCGS # 8511) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.

1911-S. PCGS graded MS-63 CAC Approved. Pleasing golden toning and a Premium Quality coin for the given grade. A pleasing choice coin that spares no compromises with its rich golden iridescence on both sides. Strike is much sharper than average for the S-mint issues, with clearly defined "S" mintmark by the arrow points and details aplenty in the eagle’s neck and upper wing feathers (two areas which tend to be weak on this design). Readily available in circulated grades due to elevated mintage, 1911-S seems to have escaped the notice of collectors. Few were saved in Mint condition at the time these were issue. Pop 189; 29 finer (PCGS # 8522) .
