(1850) Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society JAM-24. On the reverse "Premium for the best exhibited." Engraved John T. Gower. A silver medal struck at the U.S. Mint. Our grade is Unc prooflike . This lot also contains the original box of issue accompanied by an interesting handwritten letter from Mrs. Gower. In the letter she notes that the award was presented for "best exhibition of peaches".

1850 Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society Medal RM-3. Silver. Plain edge. 64mm. Almost Uncirculated. Prooflike. Described as "ornate obverse featuring a rising sun below the king's crown, various seafaring implements and products of agriculture such as sheaves of wheat, tools, a plow. Reverse with ornate wreath 'Premium For The Best Exhibited.' In the space provided for the recipient's name has been carefully engraved a she-goat standing left." Also listed in Medcalf-Russell, 2RM-4.

The medals were ordered by the Society through the agency of a Mr. Marshall of Massachusetts. At the Society's request, Marshall contacted James Ross Snowden, director of the United States Mint, who forwarded the request to the Department of the Treasury. The request was approved with the stipulation that the medals were to be made after regular Mint hours. The number of specimens minted is unknown.

The agricultural medals (types of 1850 and 1882) were "founded by business men to foster interests of agricultural and mechanical arts" according to the Standard Guide of Hawaiian coins and medals.

The Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society Medal is a silver medal which was issued by the Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society, which was active in the Kingdom of Hawaii in the 1850s-on. The Society presented the medal annually to the best in each category of a juried exhibition of Hawaiian agricultural products.

The earlier 1850-dated medals were produced at the United States Mint, while those carrying the 1882 issue date were struck in England, according the the Medcalf-Russell reference book on these. The number of specimens minted is unknown.

The obverse includes symbols of agricultural enterprise in the Hawaiian Islands -- sugar and coffee -- and implements and vehicles of trade -- the plow and tall ships; the eastern sun is rising in the background, with a palm to the left and royal crown above all. The inscription around the edge reads "Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society. Established A.D. 1882." The reverse has a wreath surrounded by the inscription "Premium for the best exhibited" with a center field for prize category and awardee's name. It is made from silver 64.5 mm, thick, approximately 82 grams, with dies engraved by Francis N. Mitchell.

1886 King Kalakaua Jubilee Medal. Official with original ribbon. Silver. Plain edge. 31mm. Choice Uncirculated. Prooflike. Listed in Medcalf-Russell as 2RM-11. "These were presented to members of the Hawaiian military and government officials. Later sold to the public during the King's fiftieth birthday celebration. Obverse head of king facing right 'Kalakaua Moi O Hawaii 1886. ' Reverse blank." Purchased through Craig Watanabe. Extremely rare.

Hawaiian 19th Century Presentation Ladel. An impressive sterling silver ladel made by M.F. Wichman with the following Hawaiian coins added to the handle: Dollar with the reverse enamled, 2 Half Dollars, Quarter and Dime. In the bowl of the ladel is a finely engraved scene of Diamond Head. Back of the ladel is engraved : Fraternal Greeting to Emma Windsor, wife of Lou B Windson, Imperial Potentate A.A.Q.JN.M.S. from the wives of the nobles of Aloha Temple, Honolulu T.H. U.S.A. Weight approximately 7 ozt.
