Lot 1633
Wathena, KS - J.J. Lakin & Co. Ad Note on Drovers Bank. $2.00 July 1, 1856. PCGS About New 53. This is a fantastic advertising note from the period when this state was known as "Bleeding Kansas" because of the intersectional battles between anti-slavery and pro-slavery citizens that eventually played a large part in the buildup to the Civil War. The host note is scarce itself, with a famous Omsby-engraved vignette. We can find no record of an advertising note on this piece in any previous auctions, and suspect that it is a discovery piece. Without the advertisement overprint, similar grade notes of this denomination have sold for upwards of $700-$800. Although this piece is difficult to estimate, we would not be altogether surprised by a final realization of multiples of that figure.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
