Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 51
1838 N-2 R1 MS65. Lustrous bright mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints, at least two-thirds of the mint color remaining. A monster gem cent except for a shallow planchet void from impurity in the metal on the edge at star 9, as struck. Otherwise the only marks are faint traces of an old fingerprint around star 5 and a speck of dark toning in the hair under the Y in LIBERTY. Great eye appeal, a truly wonderful cent except for the small planchet defect. M-LDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields creating the wonderful cartwheel luster. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census list. Noyes says either MS65 (one list), MS63 (another list), or MS60 net AU50 (the same second list under a different photo number, which shows why grading from photos can be troublesome), his photo #20995. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65RB (PCGS label included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). Now housed in a PCGS MS65 RB holder. (PCGS # 37184).
Estimated Value $2,500-UP.

A small spot of darker toning at the outer point of star 10 is the only notable mark on otherwise choice surfaces. E-MDS with a sharp spike up to the left from the coronet where it touches the curl. The reverse die clashmarks inside the wreath are clear and a faint die crack connects the E in STATES to the leaf tip below the adjacent T. Called MS63 and CC#1 in the Bland census. 1838 N-8 R1 MS63. Highly lustrous dark bluish steel and olive with original mint color covering the protected areas on both sides, at least 15% of the mint red remaining. Has to be close to a Red & Brown designation. The only marks are a tiny planchet lamination at the dentils over star 4 and a thin nick on the bust over the first 8 in the date, plus a spot of reddish brown toning left of the bottom of star 11. Sharply struck EDS with crisp recutting on RIC in AMERICA. Great eye appeal, and it comes with a highly coveted provenance. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #28701 (CC#1 is in the ANS Museum). 1838 N-12 R2 MS63. Choice highly lustrous light olive and steel brown with generous traces of bright original mint color showing in the protected areas on both sides. Nearly flawless. The only defects, and they are hardly worthy of mention, are a thin nick hidden in the dentils at star 5 and a small spot of darker toning just right of the hair bun. MDS. The doubling always seen on the left side of the wreath (from a real doubled die, not die bounce) is clear. The strike is slightly uneven, also as usual, due to non-parallel die faces causing the upper stars to be relatively flat while the lower ones are strong. Corresponding weakness shows along the bottom of the reverse while the upper part of that side is strongly impressed. A good candidate for CC#1 honors (or at least a tie). Removed from an NGC slab graded MS66BN (NGC label included) Now housed in a PCGS MS66 BN holder. (PCGS # 399518).
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 (or inverted 9) AU50. Glossy light chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the obverse highpoints. Subtle overtones of bluish steel are found in the recesses of the hair curls and at star 5. Frosty mint luster covers the protected areas on both sides and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. There is just a light touch of wear on the highest points of the design. A thin diagonal nick just right of the nostril, a couple more over the E's in ONE CENT, and a collection of microscopic planchet flakes (as struck) around the end of the wreath stem are the notable marks. MDS with a clear die crack from the dentils over star 3 to the nose and eye fading out when it exits the right corner of the eye. Called AU50 and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#2, his photo #28678. One of the other CC#2 examples in the census lists is impounded in the ANS Museum. The field of top pieces is quite limited, and the pressure to obtain one is great. Only a single mint state example is known, and it may not be available for decades. Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU58 (the PCGS label is included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). Now housed in a PCGS AU58. (PCGS # 37261).

The short dash at the dentil tips between the 3 & 9 is gone and the one right of the 9 is weak. A wonderful example of the "Silly Head" type, one of the very best of the type regardless of the die variety. Called MS66 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21476. Great eye appeal, and this cent would rate a couple points higher grade if not for a light rim bruise above star 7, a spot of verdigris right of star 9, and a speck of fine carbon under the right point of star 6. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state f. Crumbling has formed on the bottom of the D in UNITED but crumbling does not connect the C in CENT to the adjacent berry. Now housed in a PCGS MS64 BN holder. (PCGS # 405640).
Estimated Value $800-UP.

1849 N-22 R1 MS64. Lustrous dark bluish steel brown and olive with subtle hints of very faded underlying mint color peeking through the toning in a few places. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet and the eye appeal is excellent. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic ticks. The best identifying marks are a tiny vertical nick hidden in the hair at the top of the ear, a light nick at the bottom of the front edge of the neck, and a shallow planchet flake under the right foot of the 1 in the date (as struck). The reverse is flawless. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #6). The die lines from the inner and main curls are gone. Very fine die polishing lines cover the obverse fields and those fields are slightly reflective adding to the eye appeal. A beautiful example of a common variety, perfect for a date or type set. Now housed in a PCGS MS65 BN holder. (PCGS # 405685).
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1850 N-7 R2 MS65. Lustrous mint red mellowing to steel brown, about two-thirds of the mint color remaining. No notable spots, stains, or contact marks. In fact it is a challenge to find any identifying marks at all on this attractive cent. The only ones I can find, and it take a good glass to see them, are a microscopic planchet chip on the cheek left of the earlobe and another on the rim above the left edge of the E in STATES, both as struck. M-LDS, die state b. The die lines at the inner curl and main curls are weak and the fields are flowlined. A very nice example, perfect for a high-grade date or type set. Now housed in a PCGS MS65 RB holder. (PCGS # 405881).
Estimated Value $800-UP.

Lot 81
1851/81 N-3 R1 51 Over Inverted 18 MS60+. Frosty chocolate and steel with traces of reddish tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a couple tiny wisps of darker toning at stars 8-10 and a spot of dark toning in the dentils left of the date. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The repunching on the date is bold and the obverse fields are covered with sharp die lines left behind when a mint worker attempted to efface the incorrectly placed date. This is a great example of the 51 over inverted 18 variety (or 51 over 81 as it is often called), because the early die state allows the error to be seen easily. In fact the repunching is bold enough on this piece to show a part of the inverted 5 inside the bottom of the correctly positioned 8, thereby indicating that the entire date was inverted, then corrected, not just the 18. This makes sense since a 4-digit gang punch was used. Now housed in a PCGS MS65 BN holder. (PCGS # 400138).
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1851 N-8 R3- MS63. Choice highly lustrous light bluish steel brown with 5% of the original mint red remaining on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers the surfaces, even the highest points of the devices. Just a few trivial marks from flawless. These include a tiny nick on the rim at star 5, another well hidden in the hair under star 7, and a speck of carbon on the bottom of the T in UNITED. LDS, die state b. The die line over ME is gone but the lump on the throat is clear. Tied for CC#2 honors for the variety but finest of the late state. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS66BN (NGC label included). Now housed in a PCGS MS65+ BN holder. (PCGS # 406669).

1851 N-10 R1 MS65. Lustrous bright mint red mellowing to light steel brown with 80% of the mint color remaining. A beautiful, original mint state cent. The only marks are a spot of bluish steel toning on the face before the eye, a speck of carbon on a single dentil under the 8, and a small planchet flake on the rim over the E in STATES (as struck). Great eye appeal. M-LDS, die state b. The die lines are gone and a tiny lump has formed before the eye. CC#4 in the Grellman census. Now housed in a PCGS MS66 RB holder. (PCGS # 406678).

1852 N-8 R2 MS64. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown with about two-thirds of the mint color remaining. No spots or stains, and the only defects are a very tiny nick on the nose before the eye and a shallow planchet void in the hair just above the ear (as struck). Otherwise this cent is flawless. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, before any die cracks. The fields on both sides are covered with fine die polishing lines and display a bit of reflectivity. A variety that is common in mint state but this is a nice one. Now housed in a PCGS MS65+ RB holder. (PCGS # 147251).

1852 N-12 R1 Repunched 18 MS64. The obverse is bright mint red just starting to mellow on the devices with at least 75% of the mint color remaining. The reverse, in contrast, is lustrous frosty steel brown with underlying very faded mint color peeking through in the fields and protected areas. Both sides are essentially flawless. The best identifying marks are two microscopic specks of dark toning off the bust tip and a thin struck-through line (caused by a tiny piece of lint stuck on the die) right of the date. MDS, die state b (Newcomb's old #13). The repunching on the 18 is gone and a dull die crack extends from the bust to star 13. A beautiful cent that might rate gem status if the toning was more uniform between the two sides. Tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS66RB (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution). Now housed in a PCGS MS65+ RB holder. (PCGS # 147261).

1853 N-18 R1 MS63+. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel brown, about half the mint color remaining, mostly on the obverse. A beautiful cent, flawless except for a rather obvious struck-through line from the lowest curl to just below star 12 (as struck, the result of a fragment of fiber or piece of very thin wire stuck on the die) plus a microscopic trail of 4 microscopic planchet flakes in the field before the throat (also as struck). The only post-minting defect on this cent is a barely visible nick along the left edge of the second T in STATES. A solid gem cent if not for the mint-made defects. M-LDS, die state b. The die lines behind the head and neck are gone but the dashes under the 8 remain visible. Tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65RB (old green PCGS label included). Comes with a nice provenance. Now housed in a PCGS MS65 RB holder. (PCGS # 406022).

1854 N-26 R3+ MS63+. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown and light olive with more than two-thirds of the mint color showing on both sides. Sharply struck offering great eye appeal for the grade, very close to MS64. Just a few trivial defects, including a horizontal nick at the throat, a tiny scuff just off the bust tip, a trio of very light nicks on the rim under the 54, and a small spot of dark toning over the O in ONE. MDS, die state a. The fields are covered with extremely fine flowlines but all the tiny lines and points of the early state remain visible. (There is no state b for this variety as the die marriage ended before any significant changes occurred to either of the dies.) Tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. 1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 MS63. Choice frosty light olive and bluish steel with generous traces of faded mint color remaining on the reverse. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint luster and offer outstanding eye appeal for the grade. The only marks are a shallow planchet void on the rim at star 12 and a tiny nick on the rim under star 13. EDS, die state b. Star #6 is very faint thanks to a die clog in that area (the so-called 12-Star die state). Minor clogging is starting to show on the bust tip and star 1 as that area of the die is accumulating debris as well. A beautiful example that is very sharply struck everywhere except for the clogs mentioned. Now housed in a PCGS MS64 BN holder. (PCGS # 406174).

1856 N-1 R1 Italic 5 MS64. Lustrous bright mint red fading to light steel brown on the devices, nearly three-fourths of the original red remaining, mostly on the reverse. An eye-catching cent with just a few minor defects. These include a small diagonal nick on the cheek right of the upper lip, a couple microscopic ticks on the throat, and traces of an old fingerprint at star 10. Otherwise this cent is a gem. E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines over UN are weak but remain partially visible and the fields are beginning to display radial die flowlines. In addition there is a very shallow low spot (caused by debris, especially grease, on the die) at NT in CENT reaching up to the E in ONE. Tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census.
