The repunching under the N in CENT is clear and the die lines on the neck are sharp. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS61 and tied for CC#4, his photo #20720. 1817 N-2 R3 MS64. Choice frosty bluish steel brown and chocolate. Faded mint color shows through in protected areas of the obverse while the reverse is a darker shade of chocolate brown mottled with lighter brown. The surfaces are quite attractive with satiny mint luster covering even the highest points of the design. The obverse is solidly in the gem category, but the uneven toning on the reverse keeps that side from a similar lofty rating. The only mark is a small spot of darker steel toning in the field off the tip of the chin. LDS with all the die cracks listed by Wright clearly present, including the bisecting crack on the reverse passing from F-A to NI. Called MS65 and finest known in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#1, his photo #21262. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS66BN (PCGS label included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). Late die state with the "Finger Mouse" break on top of the head fully developed. The slightly rough depression in the field below star 5 is fully developed as well, a result of uneven die wear. Called MS61 and tied for CC#3 overall in the Noyes census, his photo #28778. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#5. However, this piece is listed as the finest known of the late die state with the full "Finger Mouse" break in both census lists. 1828 N-6 R1 MS64. Highly lustrous bluish steel and chocolate with faded mint color in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Excellent eye appeal with nearly flawless surfaces. A splash of slightly darker toning in the field touching the top of star 11 and another at the foot of the first T in STATES are the only marks. LDS with additional die cracks from the tip of the coronet through star 6 to the dentils and another up from the outer hair bun to the dentils right of star 9. The stray 8 punched at the left edge of the 2 (the so-called 28 over 88 overdate) remains visible. Tiny lumps caused by die rust are scattered over the obverse, as always on this variety. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21819. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#3. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65BN (PCGS label included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). Now housed in a PCGS MS65 BN holder. (PCGS # 36889).

1828 N-11 R2 MS62. Lustrous bluish steel brown and olive with 20% of the planchet displaying faded mint color. Just a few trivial marks, including a dull vertical nick on the chin, a couple microscopic ticks in the field near the inner curl, and a tiny splash of darker toning at TE in STATES. Nicely struck EDS except for the very tip of the nose, which did not have enough planchet metal to completely fill that spot, plus a similar shallow depression on the browlock. The gross repunching on the first S in STATES and the O in OF is obvious. A very attractive cent, and it looks choice in every respect in spite of the minor defects. Called MS60+ and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #56021. Bland says MS60+ as well but tied for CC#4 honors. 1830 N-2 R2 Large Letters Reverse MS65. Lustrous chocolate and light bluish steel brown with faded mint color showing in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and the obverse is a perfect gem offering fabulous eye appeal. The reverse is not quite as attractive thanks to a minor splash of darker toning inside the wreath and another at the dentils over the first S in STATES. Sharply struck E-MDS with a die line connecting the tip of the wreath ribbon to the base of the U in UNITED. Minor doubling shows on the browlock (caused by die bounce). The tiny "earring" die flaw that dangles from the earlobe is sharp. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20576. Bland says MS65 and tied for CC#1 as well.
