Civil War Era Photo Album. Period CDV Album with 30 cartes de visite, including eight men in uniform who are unidentified except for Dr. Lucius W. Clark, a surgeon in the 13th Regt. Conn. Vols and Dr. Homer B. Sprague, a brevet col. in the 13th Conn. Vols., noted lecturer and author of Lights & Shadows in Confederate Prisons, a personal Experience 1864-65; also, Mr. William Bishop, with W.P. Bennet, Marietta, Ohio imprint (soiled and marked through mouth). Includes a bust CDV of Grant and a CDV of a print of Washington and Lincoln, "The Father and the Martyr." Remainder are relatives of Dr. Clark.

Civil War Passes. Seven passes issued to Washington Middler between November 1861 and September 1863. They include two Officer's Passes and a Citizens' Pass from Camp Douglas (Illinois) and a Chicago City Railway Military Pass, and a pass from the Provost Marshal's Office in Vicksburg, Miss.; these are all partly printed. Two handwritten passes are from the 12th Ills. Cav. Camp Illinois Va. and from Camp Wool, Martinsburg, Shenandoah Valley, Va. All are soiled and affixed to one page, on the verso of which is an Oct. 1861 letter authorizing Middler to recruit and organize a company of light infantry for the 53rd Regt. Il. Vols. Also included is Middler's appointment to the U.S. Christian Commission, a philantropic and religious group which ministered to soldiers, and a Lincoln/Hamlin ticket for the 1860 election. Condition of all items is good to very good.

Confederate Texas Broadside - Special Orders No. 27. Confederate field-printed broadside, 8 x 4¾ in. Headed "Head Quarters, Dist. of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, Houston, Texsas, Jan. 27th, 1864. Orders of Maj. Gen. J. Bankhead Magruder declaring that all members of the state armed forces and liable for conscription are offered the option to volunteer for the following companies: Waul's Legion, Second Texes [sic], and Green's Division. Some chipping at top edge; pencilled notes in top, blank area.

[CSA] Jefferson Davis and Five Generals. Seven Cards Signed, approximately 2 x 3½ in.: CSA president Jefferson Davis (2 different cards); G. T. Beauregard, with date (1890); J.A. Early; E. Kirby Smith, with place (Sewanee); Roger A. Pryor, with sentiment (Very Respectfully); and R Toombs, with place (Washington Ga.) Toombs autograph is on a 2 x 4 in. piece of paper mounted to a 3 x 4½ in. card. Overall fine; mounting remnants on verso of six items.

Accompanied by an 1853 Letter Signed by J.W. Crisfield addressed to Jefferson Davis as Secretary of War, recommending Dr. John King for admission to the medical department of the Army. Also, a Civil War date (Sept. 9, 1864) ALS to Brig. Gen. Daniel Ruggles from engineer (Major) A.B. de Saulles, written one week after the fall of Atlanta: "…The enemy as you have no doubt seen have left our front & returned to Atlanta - but I suppose there will be but little rest for us your Engineers…."

Porter, Fitz John (1822-1901) Union general. At the battle of Second Bull Run (Aug. 29, 1862), he disobeyed orders from Gen. John Pope because of counter-intelligence he had received and which Pope was not aware of. At a politically-motivated court-martial, he was found guilty of disobedience and misconduct, and dismissed from the Army on January 21, 1863. Porter never gave up seeking vindication and in 1878, he was exonerated by a special commission under Gen. John M. Schofield, which found that Porter's actions had probably saved Pope's Army of Virginia from an even greater defeat. In 1886, President Chester Arthur reversed Porter's sentence and a special act of Congress restored Porter's commission as an infantry colonel in the U.S. Army, backdated to May 14, 1861, but without back pay. On August 7, 1886, Porter retired from the Army.

Pamphlet Inscribed and Signed on the cover, "Hon James A. Garfield / Compliments of F.J. Porter," (Philadelphia: Allen, Lane & Scott), 99 pages. Titled "Argument of John C. Bullitt, Counsel for the Petitioner, Fitz John Porter, Before the Advisory Board of Officers at West Point, January 6th, 1879," this is a record of the hearing which led to Porter's exoneration. Paper covers have minor tears at top and bottom of spine, else fine.

[Union Generals] Grant, Sherman, and Dodge. Four Cards Signed, approximately 2¼ x 3¾ in.: U.S. Grant, in purple ink; W.T. Sherman, followed by "General" (2 cards); and G. M. Dodge, followed by "Maj Gen. USA - Com. U.S. Forces Kansas & Territories." One of Sherman's cards is engraved on verso, "W.T. Sherman, General, Washington, D.C." Overall fine.
