Bennie Rubin and Harry Herschfield. Eight 8 x 10 in. negatives, three of Rubin and five of Herschfield accompanied by a positive image of each (a positive image is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). Rubin (1889-1986) was an American comedian and film actor, known for his ability to imitate many dialects. He made frequent guest appearances on both the radio and television versions of The Jack Benny Program. Herschfield (1885-1974) was an American comic artist, humor writer and radio personality, sometimes called "the Jewish Will Rogers."

Bert Lahr (1895-1967) was an American actor and comedian who worked in burlesque, vaudeville, and on Broadway, but he is best remembered for his roles as the Cowardly Lion and Kansas farmworker Zeke in the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. Haley (1898-1979) was an American stage, radio, and film actor best known for his portrayal of the Tin Man and Kansas farmworker Hickory in The Wizard of Oz.

Billie Burke and Ivor Novello. Three photos, 11 x 14 in., signed in the plate by photographer Herbert Mitchell at lower left. Two photos are of stage and film star Billie Burke (1884-1970) and composer, actor, playwright Ivor Novello (1893-1951). In 1930, the two appeared together in the very successful play "The Truth Game," written by Novello. The third photo is of Miss Burke alone; it is framed to 14¾ x 17¾. She is best known today for her role as Glinda the Good Witch of the North in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz.

Bob Hope - Autographed Photo With Negative. 8 x 10 in. photo of a dapper young Bob Hope lifting his hat and signed by Hope in black marker at top right. Accompanied by the negative for this photo, as well as a 5 x 7 in. photo of a lovely young Dolores Hope (born DeFina), also with the negative. Early in 1996, Howard Mitchell, son of photographer Herbert Mitchell, wrote to Mr. Hope to offer him this photo. Howard sent two prints to Mr. Hope, who kept one to use in a television retrospective of his life; he signed the other one and returned it to Mr. Mitchell. A copy of the letter from Mr. Hope's assistant is included.

Born Leslie Townes Hope (1903-2003) Bob Hope appeared in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in radio, television and movies. He was also known for entertaining American military personnel all over the world, beginning in 1939, at the outbreak of World War II and continuing through the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War.

Bob Hope, Ethel Merman, and Jimmy Durante. Four 8 x 10 in. publicity photos of the young actors taken for "Red, Hot and Blue," a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and the book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It premiered on Broadway in 1936 and introduced the song, "It's De-Lovely," sung by Ethel Merman. Two photos, numbered "5" and "7" on the verso show the trio together and have photographer Herbert Mitchell's original signature at lower left. A Jimmy Durante photo is signed in the plate by Mitchell and one of Merman has Mitchell's stamped imprint on the back.

Count Felix von Luckner. Two 8 x 10 in. negatives, accompanied by a positive copy of each (a positive copy is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). Count Felix von Luckner (1881-1966) was a German nobleman, navy officer, author and noted sailor who earned the epithet "Der Seeteufel" (the Sea-Devil) for his exploits in command of the sailing commerce raider SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) in 1916-1917. It was his habit of successfully waging war without any casualties that made him a hero and a legend on both sides. After the war, he went on a good-will mission around the world and was an entertaining speaker, gaining much goodwill in the U.S.

Four drawings by artist/photographer Herbert Mitchell, of performers, primarily vaudeville acts, who appeared at the famous Palace Theatre in New York. From 1913 through the 1920s, the Palace was the most desired booking in the country. Signed "Mitchell -- Strand," the caricatures are 11 x 14 in., all drawn and signed by Mitchell; they are framed to 14¼ x 17¼ in.
The caricatures are of: Edgar Bergen, with a pre-Charlie dummy; Crawford & Broderick; Cliff Edwards (Ukulele Ike); and Bert Gordon. All in fine condition.

Ethel Merman. 5 x 7 in. glass negative of a very young Ethel Merman (1908-1984), one of Broadway's biggest stars, accompanied by a positive copy (a positive copy is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). Born Ethel Agnes Zimmermann, she was known for her powerful voice, manifested in her many roles in musical theater. A few of the songs she belted out were "I Got Rhythm," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "It's De-Lovely," "Anything Goes," and "There's No Business Like Show Business," which became her theme song. No photographic print of this negative is known to be in existence.

Two 11 x 14 in. photos, one a publicity shot of Eugenie Leontovich (1900-1993) and Albert Dekker (1905-1968) for the 1930 play, "Grand Hotel." Leontovich played the role of Grusinskaya, which was portrayed by Greta Garbo in the film version; some edge wear. The second photo is of the Pickens Sisters, three sisters from Georgia who, in the 1930s, had their own radio show, concert tours and records; light stain at lower edge.

Fatty Arbuckle - Photo & Negative Never Seen By Him. Utterly charming 8 x 10 in. photo of Arbuckle, playing the guitar. The rotund, multi-talented Arbuckle also had a lovely singing voice and was very light on his feet. Signed in the plate at lower left by photographer Herbert Mitchell. Matted and framed to 14 x 17 in. Accompanied by the negative which has only been used to produce this photo.

Born Roscoe Conkling "Fatty" Arbuckle (1887-1933), Fatty was a multi-talented pioneer of Hollywood comedy, becoming one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. In 1921 he was accused of raping and accidentally killing a young woman at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Although he was acquitted in 1922 after three trials, his career was ruined and he never recuperated from the scandal.This is one of the photos Arbuckle had celebrity photograph Mitchell take in 1933, in an attempt to jump-start his career, but Arbuckle dropped dead of a heart attack before he could pick them up. This photo was never seen by Fatty Arbuckle and was never released to the public. It has remained in Mitchell's files for almost 80 years!

The print, which is matted and framed to 14 x 17 in., shows Arbuckle with his hands in his pockets and wearing his droopy pants, boots, and too-small hat, a look that Charlie Chaplin would borrow for his character, The Tramp; The other image is of Arbuckle in a suit, his thumb stuck in his mouth and holding a cigar. Both negatives are signed in the plate by photographer Herbert Mitchell. These are two of the negatives from a photo shoot Arbuckle had with celebrity photograph Mitchell in 1933, in an attempt to jump-start Arbuckle's career, but he dropped dead of a heart attack before he could pick them up. These photos were never seen by Fatty Arbuckle and were never released to the public. They have remained in Mitchell's files for almost 80 years!

Eight 10 x 8 in. negatives: two of Franchot Tone, and six of Joe Frisco, each accompanied by a positive copy (a positive copy is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). Tone (1905-1968) was an American stage, film, and television actor, star of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and many other films through the 1960s. Frisco (1889-1958) started as as a jazz dancer, then became a popular comedian, incorporating his stuttering into his act. He made his Broadway debut in the Florenz Ziegfeld Follies in 1918 and became a mainstay on the vaudeville circuit in the 1920s and 1930s.

In 1922, while performing in vaudeville, Miss Burns (1895?-1964) met George Burns and they formed a comedy team which lasted until Miss Burns' retirement in 1958; George was the straight man for Gracie's zany humor.

Pearl (1894-1992) was a vaudeville performer and a star of early radio. The character for which he was most famous, Baron Munchausen, was first introduced on The Ziegfeld Follies of the Air in 1932. Pearl has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio.

Jean Harlow. Luminous 11 x 14 in. photo, with original white ink signature ("Mitchell NY") by photographer Herbert Mitchell at lower left. Miss Harlow looks pensive as she looks over her left shoulder. Her face and hair stand out against her dark clothing and the dark background. Mitchell took this photo of Miss Harlow when she came to his studio to have photos made for an ad for Milgrim's (see following three lots). While she was there, he took the opportunity to make this lovely photo, which was not used commercially and was never released to the public. The only other copy was in Jean's mother's private collection. This photo has a repaired scratch in the dark area at bottom center. Framed to an overall size of 14¾ x 17½ in.

Born Harlean Harlow Carpenter (1911-1937) and known as the "Blonde Bombshell" and the "Platinum Blonde," Miss Harlow was known for her beauty and comedic talent. She died tragically at the age of 26 from renal failure.

Jimmy Walker - Corrupt Mayor of New York City (1881-1946) Playboy mayor of New York City (1926-1932); he started as a songwriter, then became a politician with the help of Tammany Hall. He resigned under pressure from Governor Franklin Roosevelt after being accused of accepting bribes from businessmen to influence legislation or obtain contracts for themselves. 8 x 10 in. photo of a dapper Walker holding his hat against his leg, with a group of pals and staff in front of New York's City Hall. Photo by Herbert Mitchell, a celebrity photographer during the 1920s and 30s. Word is that Walker met his second wife, chorus girl Betty Compton, at a midnight party in Mitchell's studio. The photo was never released to the public and remained in Herbert Mitchell's private collection. The original negative accompanies this photo.

Lily Damita. 11 x 14 in. photo signed in the plate by photographer Herbert Mitchell. Damita (1904-1994) was a French actress who appeared in 33 movies between 1922 and 1937. After appearing in several German films directed by Michael Curtiz, who became her first husband, she was invited to Hollywood in 1927 by Samuel Goldwyn and appeared opposite stars such as Gary Cooper, Maurice Chevalier, Laurence Olivier, Cary Grant, and James Cagney. Errol Flynn was her second husband.

This shot was supposedly a favorite of Miss Sullavan's for publicity proposes. Sullavan (1909-1960) appeared in four movies opposite James Stewart. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in "Three Comrades" (1938).

Four 8 x 10 in. negatives, two of each man, accompanied by a positive image of each negative (a positive copy is basically a xerox copy made with the sole purpose of showing what the negative images look like; photographic prints can be made from the negatives). Milton Berle (1908-2002) was an American comedian and actor. As the host of NBC's Texaco Star Theater (1948-55), he became the first major American television star and was known to millions of viewers as "Uncle Miltie" and "Mr. Television." Eddie Foy (1856-1928) was an American stage actor, musical comedy star, and vaudevillian who was a legendary figure of his time.

Miss Loy (1905-1993) was best known for her role as Nora Charles in the 1934 The Thin Man and five subsequent Thin Man films. A 1937 national poll crowned her "The Queen of Hollywood."

Beautiful early 5 x 7 in. photo of Ozzie and Harriet, c. early 1930s, when Ozzie was an orchestra leader and Harriet Hilliard was his "girl" singer, long before they had a family (and probably before their 1935 marriage) and became famous for the TV show, "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," which aired on ABC from October 3, 1952 through March 26, 1966. The Nelsons and their two sons, David and Eric "Ricky," were considered the ideal American family; Ricky, of course, became a teen singing idol. Muni (1895-1967) was born Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund, and his early years were spent on stage with the Yiddish Theatre. He became a film star when he appeared in Howard Hawks' 1932 movie Scarface. Muni was nominated six times for an Oscar; in 1936 he won the Best Actor award for his role as Louis Pasteur in The Story of Louis Pasteur. Bette Davis called Muni "the first real honest-to-God star I ever worked with" and Warner Brothers touted Muni as "the screen's greatest actor."

Carnera (1906-1967) was an Italian boxer, nicknamed the Ambling Alp, who became the world heavyweight champion. At 6'10" and 280 lbs., he was the largest heavyweight champion. He also tried Hollywood and later became a wrestling champion.
