An unusual lot.

Miscellaneous, 1956//82, Balance of Collection. Am interesting lot consisting of a State Department briefing book for the 1982 trip of Congressman Bill Nelson and delegation (including Deke) to the Soviet Union in its original 3-ring notebook; a white 3-ring notebook containing a mimeograph copy of what is apparently a memorial book about Deke with copies of photos and other memorabilia, a group of about 35+ different 8x10" black and white copies of AP Wirephoto press release ASTP photos with identifying captions as part of the photo; a "Mercury Astronauts at San Diego, Sept 19-25, 1959" spiral booklet 10x7.5" showing the astronauts during their tour of the Convair/General Dynamics plant in San Diego; various copies and handwritten notes in Deke's hand relating to STS 3-8, Deke's "USAF Experimental Flight Test Pilot's School" 1956 certificate (battered); various 747 maintenance documents, ALT Crew Notes, ALT manuals, some with Deke's original notes AND a copy of the "second Draft" of Philip Kaufman's screenplay of "The Right Stuff" (based on the book by Tom Wolfe (pages loose, may not be complete). ALSO included are video tapes including "Apollo" (7 tapes complete - Apollo 10-17), Reader's Digest/ABC "Space" (3 tapes complete. New), four loose video tapes, a CD of the 2005 Induction Ceremony of the Astronaut Hall of Fame and a rubber handstamp for Deke Slayton's name. A great, diverse and fascinating lot.

Miscellaneous, 1961/1972, "Milk Bottle" Mercury, Gemini, Apollo Plaque (20x15") This striking brown plastic plaque is designed with individual spaces showing the flight insignia of each flight and with a clear plastic cover into which the collector could place a special commemorative milk bottle cap (bet most of you can't remember when milk was delivered to the home owners' door in a glass bottle with paper cap at top). This plaque in is pristine condition in its original box and with the original "Manned Spaceflight" enclosure. We have seen these before, but they have always been in "well used" (an understatement) condition. This plaque will make a great addition to any historical space collection.

Miscellaneous, 1969, "12th Annual Goddard Memorial Dinner" Program. +(7x11") The front page of this program reads: "To Mitch" and is signed by Barry Goldwater and Thomas J. Heyden, Jr. The program lists the consignor as being awarded the Robert H. Goddard Historical Essay Award at the dinner, presented by Dr. Wernher von Braun, for his essay "Development of the Lifesaving Rocket". An important award that has not been publicized all that much. Unusual and interesting.

Miscellaneous, 1969/./1992, Balance of Collection. A diverse lot that includes three different sheets of US space stamps, each in a US postal Service black Presentation, folder with Slayton's name embossed on the face (5c Sam Houston, 6c Apollo 8 and 29c Shuttle stamps); a 1984 typed letter on Coors letterhead from Alan Shepard (signed Alan in red ink) re the upcoming Lindburgh dinner; assorted Russian language newspapers (related to ASTP); a 1980, 10th World Aerobatic Championship Program/magazine signed by Chuck Yeager on the cover along with autographs of several of the competitors on the inside (some some hand-written notes by Slayton are included also); an aeronautical engineering report for Aero 132 at the Univ. of Minnesota and submitted by (B+ grade) entitled "Structural Design of a Wing" and including several pages of engineering drawings by Slayton); a 1996 typed letter from Tom Hanks on his business letter head re distribution of profits for his TV movie "From the Earth to the Moon" plus diverse other autographs, etc are included. ALSO hard cover books are including such as "Apollo Soyuz Test Project / Summary Science Report" (NASA SP-412), "Leap of Faith" by Gordon Cooper, autographed), "Biomedical Results of Apollo (NASA SP-368, autographed by one of the authors), the "1996 National Hall of Fame "Enshrinee Album" (the year Deke was enshrined into this august organization) and "On the Shoulders of Titans" (NASA SP-4203, hard, shrinkwrapped). Alseo two US (including a silver Apollo 1 Memorial) medallions and one Russian bronze medallion. A diverse, but important lot.

Photos, Etc.
An interesting lot consisting of a copy of "Moon Shot" by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton (1994, First Edition, 383pp, hard with dust jacket) inscribed to Bobbie Slayton and inscribed by Alan Shepard, Jay Barbaree and Howard Benedict. Also included is a limited edition (No. 49/90) color photo by "The Mercury Astronauts" and signed by John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Gordon Cooper, a fabulous black and white photo (8x10") of all of the Mercury Seven astronauts (less Gus Grissom) apparantly taken in Florida, a black and white autographed photo (8x10") of Deke in a crowd with French President Valerie Giscard d'Estaing (c1974-1981), five 8x10" black and white photos of Deke in one capacity or another including in Launch Control smoking a monster cigar and another where he is holding the proposed solution to the Apollo 13 oxygen problem, a lithium hydroxide container and explaining it to a group of mission controllers (?), etc. and a copy of the book "Last Man on the Moon" by Gene Cernan (First Edition, March 1999, 356pp., hard with dust cover) and autographed/inscribed by the Author, Gene Cernan. A nice lot in excellent overall condition.

Miscellaneous, 1984//1993, Deke Slayton's Handwritten Day Planners. Lot of eight different years (1984, 1986-1991, 1993) of day planners, each year in a seprate plastic box containing 12 seperate monthly day books filled with Deke's listings of meetings and notes. We ran a similar group of planners from Deke's NASA years some time ago. This box just came to light. It includes note re travel, speeches, and his Conestoga rocket launches, plus more ordinary and mundane life notations. ALSO included is a seperate "Travel Diary" written by Bobbie Slayton (?) re a trip to Japan taken by Dr/Mrs Charles Berry (NASA doctor) and Mr/Mrs Slayton for the April 14-22, 1984 "Space Industrial Seminar" (fascinating behind-the-scene comments - a little on the spicy side). A great lot of first-person, handwritten history.

All are inscribed and signed by the astronauts and are in excellent condition.

An interesting lot including an autographed copy of Alan Bean's book "Apollo" (1995, 176pp., hard with dust jacket) picturing his space art, an unsigned photo in an ornate frame of General Doolittle, Deke and Bobbie Slayton (they were good friends), assorted photos of Deke, some "Get Well/Christmas" cards (US and Russian, Deke's "Delta Pilot/F-106" certificate (1958), a large yellow/blue/red flag that we cannot identify, etc. An interesting lot. Some faults.

Miscellaneous, Balance of Slayton Collection. A diverse lot of this and that including a typed 1998 letter to Bobbie Slayton from Gene Cernan, a Valentine card from to Bobbie signed by Deke (undated), two small (3x4") hand-painted (?) cards from German artist Detlev von Ravenswaay (each singed on the reverse), an STS-47 flown "Space Center" flag (4x7) on battered presentation card, a Formula One Air Races (Second Place)1989 plaque (4x6") and a metal/wood (1972) plaque from the InstitutoMilitar de Engenharia (Brazil) both to Deke, a pair of brown leather gloves, a female cable connector in a plastic bag with a typed note: "Block II Simulator for a Hot Aviator Who is about the Join the Racing Circuit" and signed by "The World's Hottest acrobatic pilot", an Executive Inventory Record document that has several pages handwritten by Deke, etc. An unusually interesting lot.

Miscellaneous, c1960//90s, Balance of Collection. A small but nice lot consisting of a green Jim McDivitt autograph on a NASA photo card with violet NASA hand stamp (6x4"), An Apollo 11 Manned Flight Awareness Medallion (…"containing FLOWN metal from the spacecrafts Columbia and Eagle that took Astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on their historic flight…"), an Apollo 11 commemorative medal, a 1993 Russian medallion (cloisonné) issued in honor of the joint US/Russian space missions (Phase I) AND a piece of the Edwards AFB lakebed (2.5x2x.5") where experimental aircraft are tested and which serves as a backup landing field for Shuttle flights unable to land at Cape Kennedy. The all natural lakebed is composed of hydrostatically compressed clay which, when it rains extensively (rare in California deserts), causes brine shrimp eggs to hatch. A printed note from the consignor explains this further. An attractive, clean and diverse lot.

Miscellaneous, c1975//81, Deke Slayton's Steins and Mugs. Lot of three different including a Sheffield Pewter mug (5x4") engraved: "Flight Test Operations / Edwards AFB / Deke", a 1975 white ceramic mug (6x3.5") with the ASTP logo on one side and "Donald "Deke" Slayton in gold ink on the other and a 1981 "Shuttle" stein with lid (9x4") that pictures the Shuttle in three configurations and is marked on the base: "This handcrafted American Heritage Commemorative Stein, designed by Aladar Klubert made by world famous Ceramarte in Brazil". An attractive trio.

Miscellaneous, c1990s, Deke Slayton's Red NOMEX Flightsuit (size M/L) with black accents that appears to be one of those Deke wore during Formula One airplane racing after he retired from NASA. This fire-resistant suit was protection in case of fire. There is a "Diest" yellow/red patch on the left shoulder and white knit cuffs.

ALSO included is a small blue flight suit (size 10) with "Space Shuttle", "NASA", "US Flag" and "Space Camp / Florida" patches on the sleeves and chest. Some stains but good condition overall. An interesting, and colorful, lot.

Shuttle Program, c1970s, "WET-F" Warm-up Jacket. This striking red/white acrylic warm-up jacket (zippered front, elastic waist, unsized (small?) was made by Dolfin Corp, Shillington, PA was used in the JSC Water Emersion Test Facility to take the chill off after submerged training or filming in the large pool used to simulate weightlessness. There is a large "J.S.C." lettering stitched onto the jacket back. Only about 15 of these jackets were made (and probably only 1 or 2 saved after all these years) for use by astronauts and WET-F personnel. Excellent condition and the first this writer has ever seen. A signed/typed Consigner's COA is included.
