1844 Proof Original Breen 1-A R6 F15. Sharpness near mint state but the planchet is lightly eroded with a few patches of shallow pitting on the reverse. No verdigris. There is a sharp nick on the main curl and a thin nick on the inner curl plus a strong nick on the rim under the 44. Medium brown and chocolate mixed with darker greenish olive in protected areas. A proof-only strike that was disrespected in a serious way. Weight 77.9 grains.

1849 C-1 R2 EF40. Five points sharper but there are a few light contact marks on the neck and in the field off the chin. The marks are trivial and the eye appeal of this piece is excellent. Choice glossy light chocolate brown and olive. Sharply struck E-MDS.

1850 C-1 R2 AU50. Glossy olive brown and chocolate. Sharply struck with smooth, attractive surfaces. The only marks are a tiny scratch hidden in the hair under the ear and another at the F in OF. EDS. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58 (NGC label included).

1853 C-1 R1. NGC graded MS-66 Brown. Frosty chocolate brown with bluish steel overtones on the obverse. Traces of faded mint red show on both sides. No spots or stains. The only marks are some microscopic ticks in the field between star 2 and the chin. MDS showing a subtle depression in the field off the end of the nose. Our grade is MS62.

1854 C-1 R1+ MS62. Lustrous bluish steel brown and olive with faded mint red bleeding through in the fields and protected areas on both sides. No spots or stains. The only mark is a thin diagonal nick or pre-striking planchet chip on the jaw. Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching left of the base of the 1 is clear. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS62RB (NGC label included).

1854 C-1 R1+ MS60+. Lustrous light greenish olive brown with overtones of light bluish steel in protected areas. Very sharply struck showing needle-sharp details throughout. The only marks are a tiny speck of carbon nestled between two dentils under the 8 and very faint hairlines in the fields on both sides. Very early die state, Manley state 1.0 early, with hard, slightly reflective fields.

A puff of darker chocolate toning in the field right of the inner curl and a light hairline scratch on the jawline are the only notable marks. Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The dash left of the base of the 1 is clear.

1855 C-1 R1. NGC graded MS-66 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel, nearly a third of the mellowed mint color remaining. The only marks are a tiny abrasion in the field close over the tip of the coronet and a thin nick on the rim under star 13. Excellent eye appeal, hence the lofty grade assigned by NGC. MDS with microscopic radial die flowlines covering the fields. Our grade is MS64. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.
