Although the case is problem-free and original with no signs of tampering, the mica is cracked and is missing a rather large piece from the center. Lot 2948		"SCHAPKER & BUSSING" EP-129, HB-214, S-158 10¢. Fr-EP-129. This variety is listed by Reed as an R-5, indicating 21 to 30 known, although it is likely near the top end of that range. This piece has a very handsome case, with glossy light brown surfaces that are completely original and problem-free. Lot 2949		"J. GAULT" EP-78, HB-131, S-96, 5¢ Plain frame. Fr-EP-78. The case of this Gault piece displays mottled olive and chocolate brown surfaces. The edge reveal and tooling marks at the top of the reverse suggest either a replaced stamp or improper assembly. The stamp itself is remarkably bright and almost perfectly centered. The mica is about 90% clear with only minor crazing and a small crack near the top rim. Actually a very attractive piece despite its flaws. Very Fine. Ex: Bowers & Merena 11/2009:54. Lot 2950		"J. GAULT" EP-78, HB-131, S-96, 5¢ Plain frame. Fr-EP-78. The five cent plain frame is the second most common of all the Gault pieces. This example is quite attractive, with a smooth brown case that is original and unopened. The bottom half of the mica is crazed, but the clarity isn't all that bad. Lot 2953		"J. GAULT" EP-79, HP-132, S-96A, 5¢ Ribbed frame. Fr-EP-79. This is a gorgeous example of this considerably scarcer and popular variety. The mica is clear and unbroken and the stamp is a bright brown with excellent centering. The entire reverse has retained its original silvering except for the outer rim. Lot 2954		"J. GAULT" EP-116, HB-133, S-97, 10¢ Plain frame. Fr-EP-116. This is a very nice Gault 10¢ piece, with a case that is an even medium brown with very little wear. The mica shows some normal crazing and dents, but none are severe and the mica is relatively clear. The stamp is well centered and is free of any noticeable flaws. Lot 2955		"J. GAULT" EP-116, HB-133, S-97, 10¢ Plain frame. Fr-EP-116. Some mottled coloring appears on the case of this piece, which is mostly medium brown with darker areas on the reverse. The mica is about 30% crazed, mostly at the lower left third, and the stamp is decent but has an apparent pen cancellation or faded ink mark on the face. Lot 2956		"J. GAULT" EP-116, HB-133, S-97, 10¢ Plain frame. Fr-EP-116. This is an above average looking piece, although some tooling marks on the case and a rotated back suggest a stamp replacement. The case itself is an even olive-tan color, and the mica is above average with excellent clarity and very few noticeable flaws. Lot 2957		"J. GAULT" EP-117, HB-134, S-97a, 10¢ Ribbed frame. Fr-EP-117. This is the much scarcer Ribbed Frame variety. The outer edge of the encasement has a lovely olive toning, with the back an even medium brown across the entire surface. The mica is completely intact, with a couple of small areas of crazing, only noticed under magnification. The stamp has faded a bit, however, it is still a pleasing green. Estimated Value $400 - 500. Lot 2958		"J. GAULT" EP-149, HB-136, S-98a, 12¢ Ribbed frame. Fr-EP-149. This is an extremely rare variety, listed as R-9 by Reed and with no more than four or five pieces believed extant. This lovely piece was once part of the Frederick Mayer Collection, and when offered by Heritage in 2007 was described as follows: "The case is handsome and problem free, with pronounced ribbing on the front frame. The stamp is a bit dull, and the mica has a few more crazes and separations than we like to see, although it does remain substantially clear." We would add that there is some very minor waviness on the reverse that was likely caused by nothing more than normal circulation. A very important offering of a variety that is seldom offered. Lot 2959		"IRVING HOUSE" (Hunt & Nash) EP-150, HB-155, S-110 12¢. Fr-EP-150. This is a very rare variety, with perhaps as few as four of five pieces known to have survived for collectors today. The mica is completely missing, which presents the issue that the stamp could have theoretcially been added or replaced. There is nothing to indicate that this was the case, although the stamp is somewhat soiled and wrinkled. The case itself is untampered and is actually very high grade with a lovely even tan appearance. An important offering for the specialist. Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000. Lot 2960		"LORD & TAYLOR" EP-172, HB-173, S-126 24¢. Fr-EP-172. While this is a rare denomination, estimated by Reed to have less than 10 survivors, there are some numerous pry marks on the back and general warping of the case that suggests a stamp replacement. That being said, the piece is not unattractive and the Lord & Taylor issues are not at all common as a group. The stamp itself is a little dull, which argues for it having been replaced many years ago, and the mica shows normal crazing and cracking. Fine. Estimated Value $800 - 900. Lot 2961		"J. GAULT" EP-178, HB-139, S-100, 30¢ Plain frame. Fr-EP-178. When last sold by Heritage, they described this 30¢ Gault as follows: "This J. Gault Thirty Cent is a solid, problem free high-end example. The case is flawless for the grade, with a handsome, natural olive-gold tone. The stamp is only a touch down from it full color, and the mica is perfectly clear save for a tiny craze at the top center edge. A premium example of this very scarce denomination." We would only add that the case was probably cleaned long ago. There is also some minor PVC on the surfaces, but this is trivial and could likely be easily corrected. Extremely Fine. Lot 2962		1864 Abraham Lincoln/Andrew Johnson Election Campaign Ferrotype, Designed by John Gault. The image and legend for President Lincoln occupy the front side of this 1" diameter ferrotype. Lincoln�s ferrotype photograph is encased in an hour glass shaped, gilt brass frame, inscribed: "For President - Abraham Lincoln." On the reverse, Andrew Johnson�s photograph appears in a round, gilt brass frame, encircled by the inscription, "For Vice President - Andrew Johnson." The patent date August 12, 1862 appears at the bottom. Johnson's ferrotype shows noticeable wear and some chips, while Lincoln's image, remains quite bright and clear. The frame was designed by John Gault, who patented this design and also made the Encased Postage Stamps of the Civil War era, for use as small change due to a shortage of coin. A couple of vertical creases and a couple of other lighter vertical bends define the grade, however this note likely saw very little in terms of actual circulation as the paper is bright white and the colors and inks are as bold and bright as the day the note was printed. Lot 2992		Original Series, $1 National Bank Note. The National Exchange Bank, Weston, WV. Ch. # 1607. PMG Net Very Good 8. Fr-380. . KL-1086. This is a rare type from West Virginia. Only 18,000 notes from 5 different banks issued this denomination, thus it is not surprising that a mere six Aces from all West Virginia banks have survived. Three $1s, or half the population from the state, have surfaced from this bank. This piece is formerly from the Q. David Bowers collection of First Charter Aces. It has a number of edge splits and tears of varying size and importance, and the PMG label reads "repairs." While low grade, it is an important offering of a denomination that isn't often offered from this state. When last sold by Stack's in September, 2010 as part of the Bowers collection, it brought $3,737.50; when Mr. Bowers purchased this note in 2004 he paid the sum of $6,723. Lot 2994		1902, $10 National Bank Note. The Old NB of Martinsburg, WV. Ch. #6283. PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ. Fr-624. . KL-1228. A lovely high grade example with broad margins and excellent signatures, this piece is new to the census and is one of only a dozen large size notes known from this bank. Lot 2996		1902, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Belington, WV. Ch. #6619. PCGS Very Fine 35. Fr-650. . KL-1302. This rare note is one of only six known large size notes extant from this bank, which was curiously not the "first" bank in town (the Citizens National Bank beat it out by one charter number, 6618).
