Lot 1932		1905. PCGS graded Proof 58. CAC Approved. Minor hairlines on both sides. Only 92 pieces struck. For mintages of Liberty double eagles at Philadelphia in the 20th century both Proof as well as business strikes, there is little middle ground; mintages are either million-plus, as is the case with the 1904 and 1907 issues, or lower six figures and below. With its mintage of 58,919 pieces business strikes and 92 Proofs, the 1905 is part of a trio of issues with five-figure production, along with the 1902 and 1906. One may surmise that the high production of double eagles Philadelphia coined in 1904 crowded out the possibilities for large mintages in the next two years. Many Proof survivors from this issue come signs of handling, possibly from some time spent in circulation. It has been observed by collectors of the early part of the 20th century that some collectors were forced to spend their Proof gold coins during the troubles of the Great Depression. This likely accounts for many impaired Proofs one sees. A rich reward descends to the successful bidder on this Lot. Final year of the Liberty Type, second issue ever from the then-newly operational Denver Mint, and displaying resplendent warm-gold. The surface luster is nicely layered over each side of this handsome near-Gem. All this is perhaps obvious from the photos. What we need to emphasize also is that the strike is customarily crisp and detailed for the issue with the usual sharp metal flows into the deeper recesses of the dies on both sides (PCGS # 9053) . Lot 1942		1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim. NGC graded MS-62. CAC Approved. A lovely satiny mint example in honey-color gold. A frosty coin. Those who have dealt in Roman Numerals $20 gold pieces for some time will certainly agree this has all the right qualifications for the grade and then some. When you hold this rare masterpiece in your hand, and the light strikes it with the magnifier positioned over the main device, then it clearly becomes something much more than an everyday numismatic experience. It turns into an artwork of the highest caliber. Displayed is the pure genius behind its design, consolidated onto a small round golden disk. This marvel of design, this Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 is one of most famous American gold rarities. The wire rim here is most evident on the obverse. The satiny mint luster flows and glows as it swirls to and fro with typical mesmerizing revolutions over each side. The surface has retained its golden freshness through the years with only minor diminishment. Modest MS62 grade aside, consider this coin as one meant for the person who is looking for much more than just a "pleasing High Relief." Lot 1944		1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim NGC graded Unc Details. Scratches. The scratch is in the left obverse field. Also there is a small reverse scratch. A nice example. For the obverse design Saint-Gaudens (always with the hyphen between the words, for he was no Saint) chose his earlier standing figure known as Fame, originally depicted on the Sherman Victory monument erected earlier in the decade at the Grand Army Plaza in Central Park, New York City. Some modifications were made, but the goddess remains essentially the same. In the background is a miniature of the United States Capitol building and around a glory of rays of the sun. Lot 1946		1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Flat Rim. PCGS graded MS-64. Splendid golden toning. A full bold strike. Brilliant, lustrous, and of strict high-end quality in all areas, this lovely MS64 MCMVII High Relief Saint-Gaudens beauty will, we are confident, find a home either with a type set buyer or with a double eagle specialist or, possibly with someone who is attracted to the fame of the coin. The High Relief $20 gold piece has long been admired as America's most beautiful gold coin. From the beginning of his Presidency, Theodore Roosevelt marveled at the artistry of ancient Greek coins. He considered contemporary U.S. designs to be insipid and bland by comparison. Having made acquaintance with the high priests in fine art of the day, he negotiated a contract with Augustus Saint-Gaudens to produce this $20 gold coin. Saint-Gaudens was one of America's foremost sculptors of the day. Keeping the Treasury Department and the Mint in the dark, Roosevelt gave Saint-Gaudens free license to come up with ideas. This 1907 $20 gold coin is Saint-Gaudens�s legacy to all Americans (PCGS # 9136) . Historic note: No coin sale would be complete without at least one offering of this beautiful and prized High Relief Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece struck in 1907. The coin is an example of the so-called Flat Rim variety; the other or Wire Rim has a "fin" of metal was forced up between the dies and the restraining collar during repeated impressions. Often 3 to 5 blows by the dies were required to strike the High Reliefs fully. The surviving numbers of the High Relief twenties has always been a subject of discussion, but those in better grade were obviously set aside at the time of issue and remain cherished possessions today. Lot 1947		1907. PCGS graded MS-65+. A gorgeous gem in a new Secure Plus holder. Flattering mint frost that pulsates with yellow-gold to orange-gold color. Struck with controlled precision throughout. President Theodore Roosevelt objected to the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, since he felt such a phrase had no place on our coinage. Perhaps he had a personal reason to object, or was merely following the ideals of separation of church and state. Whatever his reason, Roosevelt's objections were appropriately voiced within the Mint. This design is Charles Barber's further modification of the Saint-Gaudens design, prepared for ease of minting and use in commerce. The No Motto design was produced only in 1907 and part of 1908.
