The satiny luster is a bit subdued by a very thin layer of natural oxidation. Sharply struck except for the T in CENT, which is flat for some reason (die clog?). E-MDS, die state b early. The die crack through the date and stars is very faint. The repunching on the bottom of the 1 & 8 is sharp. Our grade is MS60.

1849 N-3 R3 MS62+. Very attractive lustrous chocolate brown and olive with generous traces of mint red remaining on both sides. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a tiny planchet chip (as struck) on the rim under the 4 and a speck of carbon nestled against the front edge of the chin. The reverse is flawless. M-LDS, die state q. There is crumbling on the left base of the I in UNITED but no crumbling connecting the O in ONE to the leaf at left. An impressive cent, very close to MS63 choice. CC#3 for the variety in the Grellman census and it comes with a nice provenance.

The only marks, and they are not at all significant, are a pair of small nicks or planchet chips on the jawline above the throat, another small void on the right end of the truncation, and a tiny nick on the truncation above the 8. E-MDS, die state b. Tied for CC#7 honors in the Grellman census.

1849 N-27 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with peeps of faded mint color remaining on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas. No spots or stains, and the only mark is a dull, very light nick on the top of the ear. Sharply struck MDS, die state b. The spike down from the dentils at star 9 is clear. The doubled reverse die (double hubbed similar to the famous 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent) is clearly evident. Our grade is MS62, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. Only two mint state examples are known for this tough die variety. A new discovery found unattributed in a slab.

The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a small nick on the coronet over the B in LIBERTY and a tiny, shallow planchet flake in the field under star 13. The strike is sharp and the details are crisp, but the luster is subdued by a thin layer of oxidation. MDS, die state b, showing a fine die line arcing from the right side of the F in OF. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60. CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label and this cent comes with a nice provenance.
