1831 N-8 R3 MS62. Lustrous light greenish olive brown and chocolate with traces of faded mint red in protected areas on both sides. Sharply struck and very attractive. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas. The only notable defects are three tiny specks of carbon: one on the bottom edge of the truncation above the 8, another on the upper left edge of the hair bun, and a third close under star 5. MDS with a fine but clear die crack through the tops of TED-ST. Called MS60+ and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes photo #36861. And it comes with a nice provenance.

1833 N-6 R1 AU50. Double Profile. Very attractive glossy light olive and chocolate with overtones of light bluish steel on both sides. No defects, just light wear on the highest points. MDS with a clear double profile (caused by die bounce) from the tip of the coronet to the center of the nose, from the tip of the nose to the lips, and along the front edge of the neck. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW.

1834 N-1 R1 Small 8 with Large Stars NGC graded MS62 Brown. Frosty tan and light brown with a very subtle hint of reddish tan in protected areas. The surfaces are very clean suggesting this cent was washed in a solvent. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. MDS. The repunching inside the C in AMERICA is still visible but the fields show fine radial flowlines. Our grade is AU58. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1834 N-1 R1 Small 8 with Large Stars MS62. Highly lustrous golden tan with subtle overtones of bluish steel on the reverse. The satiny luster is unbroken and this piece offers excellent eye appeal. The only notable marks are a small spot of darker olive brown toning in the field above the inner hair bun and a barely visible trail of microscopic planchet chips from above IB into the field right of star 6. M-LDS. The repunching inside the C in AMERICA is faint.

1834 N-5 R5 Large 8 & Stars with Medium Letters VF25. Ten points sharper but there is a patch of fine granularity at ATE in STATES plus very faint roughness covering much of the rest of the reverse, mostly on the left side. No verdigris, and the only mark of any significance is a vertical nick below the line under CENT. Chocolate brown blending to olive brown in a few places. The obverse is nice and glossy while the reverse is not as glossy but far from matte. MDS. A decent example of this popular "Redbook" type.

1835 N-3 R3 Head of 1834 F15. Ten points sharper but there are several sharp pinscratches in the field above the back of the head and tiny pits are scattered over the lower half of the obverse. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and attractive. Recolored glossy chocolate brown mixed with some reddish chocolate on both sides. MDS. Removed from an NGC slab graded XF Details, Environmental Damage (NGC label included, and it shows the Reiver provenance).

1837 N-7/8 R1 Plain Hair Cord NGC graded MS66 Brown. Lustrous very light olive brown with satiny golden light steel toning covering the protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are virtually flawless. The best identifying marks, and they are trivial, are some very slightly darker toning covering the neck and a microscopic tick on the upper left point of star 3. MDS. The die lines of the early state over ERICA (the N-8 die state) are gone but the dentils are complete around both sides. Our grade is MS63. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1837 N-7/8 R1 Plain Hair Cord NGC graded MS63 Brown. Lightly cleaned and retoned frosty light steel brown fading to darker chocolate and steel. There are traces of extremely fine porosity near the dentils in several places on the obverse, a rim nick at star 8, a smoothed rim bruise over the second S in STATES, and a small dig on the leaf under T in CENT. LDS, the N-7 die state for this variety (early examples are called N-8). The die lines of the N-8 die state are gone as are many of the dentils. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF40. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1837 N-9 R1 Beaded Hair Cord PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty light bluish steel brown and olive with generous traces of original mint red remaining on both sides. A splash of darker olive brown toning at the bust tip and a smaller one on the browlock hurt the otherwise excellent eye appeal of this cent. E-MDS. An obvious die crack reaches from the bust tip through the portrait to the hair under star 8 and finer cracks extend from the dentils arcing through star 12 and another from the dentils down through star 9 and the hair to the 37 and dentils below. Nicely struck except for weakness on the E in CENT. Our grade is MS60.

1837 N-16 R3 Plain Hair Cord AU55. Glossy steel brown and light chocolate with a dozen small splashes of darker reddish chocolate toning scattered over the reverse. Peeps of faded mint color show on both sides. Just the faintest trace of rub on the highest points, but the darker splashes on the reverse do catch your eye. E-MDS. The dentils on the obverse are complete and most of the ones on the reverse are still visible in spite of extensive die wear.

Actually this piece is sharp enough to show that the two cracks never actually meet but parallel each other on the cheek where the first crack (the one through star 4) fades out. You seldom see an example sharp enough to show this feature. A sharp albeit imperfect cent.
