Lot 397
1817 N-17 R4 EF40. Beautiful glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty cartwheel luster shows in the protected areas on both sides. The sharpness is closer to EF45 but there are too many light contact marks for the higher grade. The best identifying marks are a small nick on the front edge of the neck and a dull, narrow scrape on the neck under this nick. Not quite perfect but still a very important example of this tough die variety. MDS. Die cracks have raised the right arm of the first T in STATES toward the rim but the crack up from that E to the dentils above has not formed. Called EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #25240. Del Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#2 honors among the confirmed examples in his census. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58 (NGC label included, #446670-001, and it shows the attribution and Rasmussen provenance). And it comes from a long line of distinguished collectors.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
Ex Clarence S. Bement, Henry Chapman 5/29/1916-Henry C. Hines-Floyd T. Starr, 1949 ANA Sale, Numismatic Gallery 8/21/1949:894-C. Douglas Smith-Willard C. Blaisdell 7/1976-Del Bland 3/1977-R. S. Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:483-Wes Rasmussen, Heritage 1/13/2005:3398. Comes with the C. Douglas Smith envelope that contains a typed note from Doug to Willard (Bill) Blaisdell offering to sell him the coin at the same $8 price Doug paid at the 1949 ANA Sale. In addition, the Doug Smith envelope has annotations by Ted Naftzger (who purchased the Blaisdell collection but did not retain this piece for his collection).

The weight is normal, 170.2 grains versus the standard of 168.0 grains. Perhaps one of the last struck from these dies.

1818 14-Stars with Continuous Wreath Reverse. Struck "Copy" from handmade dies. Unique Altered Obverse Die Trial. Go. These extremely rare "cents" were struck using handmade dies that very crudely simulate the Matron Head cents of that year. The style and execution of the few examples known is similar to the famous 1848 "Small Date" cents that are included in the Newcomb book. Three examples of the 14-Star version are known to us, with the most recent appearance being the Dan Holmes example (lot 103 in our 30 May 2010 sale). The example being offered here is different is two significant respects. First, it is an obverse die trial struck over a Beaded Hair Cord large cent, 1837-1839, with undertype of the obverse of the regular large cent clearly visible on the reverse of this piece. Second, and most importantly, the 14-Star obverse die was altered to eliminate one of the stars. Rather than simply erasing one star, the "engraver" eliminated stars 11, 12, and 13 and replaced them with two large stars (actually 6-lobed fleurons) leaving a total of 13 stars (consistent with the normal Federal cents of that time). Our initial suspicion was that this must have started out as a die trial of the unaltered 14-Star obverse die and someone replaced three stars with two larger ones by moving metal on the struck piece. However, the radial die crack that extends from the rim between stars 11 & 12 to the back of the head just below the hairbun (on the normal 14-Star version) is still present on this piece, although it now passes through the lower half of star 11. If metal had been scavenged from this area the crack would have been eliminated or significantly affected. In addition the two large stars have the same "struck appearance" as all the others. Most but not all of the stars show doubling, which is normal. Glossy medium brown and chocolate. There are minor marks scattered over both sides, including many microscopic pinscratches around the date, but they are insignificant at this grade level. A most-curious piece that does little to solve the mystery of the "14-Star, Continuous Wreath Cent." Weight 157.8 grains.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1819/8 N-1 R1 Overdate 9 over 8 MS60. Attractive frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint color peeking through on the reverse. Very nice, nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a nick-like planchet chip in the center of the neck and a small planchet flake (as struck) at the left base of the E in CENT. Sharply struck EDS showing smooth, hard fields on both sides. There are triple profiles on many of the obverse devices, including the ear, nose, chin, and bust plus several of the stars (all caused by die bounce). A very nice example of this popular overdate variety.

A light rim bruise under star 13 and a faint planchet void line from ES to OF (as struck) are the notable marks, but they are not distracting. LDS. 1826 N-1 R2 G4. Double Struck over Off Center Reverse Brockage. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. The rim was flattened at stars 2-5 with lighter flattening on the rim at stars 12-13. An inconsequential cent except for the remarkable mint error involved. The first strike was a reverse brockage. AME from AMERICA shows clearly at stars 9-11 indicating that side was struck at least partially by a reasonably well centered reverse die. The opposing section on the reverse shows a clear incuse brockage impression of TED from UNITED of a 90% off center struck cent that failed to eject completely from the coining chamber. The off center brockage error was followed up by a normal centered strike. A really neat mint error, but in low grade as is so often the case with these underappreciated "spoiled" cents.
