1796 S-92 R3 Draped Bust PCGS graded VF25, CAC Approved. Single Leaves at top of Wreath. Frosty chocolate and light olive brown with slightly lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. Nicely struck and well balanced on a smooth planchet. The only significant mark is a dull scratch from the bottom of the bust to the rim just right of the 6. E-MDS, Breen state II. The date is complete and the legends are strong. A nice Draped Bust 1796. Our grade is net F12+, close to F15.

Lightly cleaned and retoned mostly glossy chocolate brown mixed with some lighter and darker shades of brown on the obverse. LDS, Breen state III, with a large, slightly raised retained cud break covering most of the area behind the head. The base of the date is starting to fade into the rim below but the remainder is clear and the legends are complete.

The date and legends are complete and easily readable except for OF AM, which are faint or missing. M-LDS. The die crack through the top of TY is strong and the area above the crack is slightly sunken as a retained cud.

Traces of dark greenish verdigris can be found nestled into protected areas on the reverse. Slightly glossy reddish brown and chocolate. Rare M-LDS, Breen state III, with a bold crack through TY and the area above the crack clearly sunken as a retained cud break. A narrow rim cud shows in the dentils left of the L in LIBERTY. A neat die state.

1796 S-116 R5- Draped Bust VG10. Sharpness VF25 but covered with uniform very fine porosity. No verdigris and the only marks are a misplaced planchet cutter impression at the rim before the chin and at the opposing area over ERI in AMERICA. This defect was caused at the mint, of course, but it still catches your eye. Slightly glossy steel and chocolate brown. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on the obverse. A decent example of a very tough variety in spite of the mint error.

1797 S-121b R3- Gripped Edge, Double Struck F12. Sharpness EF45 but lightly corroded and there is a patch of shallow reddish verdigris behind the head. Frosty blend of dark steel and olive mixed with lighter brown and reddish chocolate. The mix of tones on the obverse is not very attractive but the toning on the reverse is more uniform and that side offers far better eye appeal. Sharply double struck with a rotation of 10-15 degrees between the impressions. The date reads "179797" with portions of the extra "97" on the bust of Ms Liberty. Additional doubling is visible on the devices and legends on both sides. The date and legends are strong and the grip marks on the edge are clear.

The surfaces are smooth but there are three dull punchmarks on the reverse, one of them strong enough to create a bulge in the area above T in LIBERTY. A pair of fine scratches in the top of the wreath round out the marks on this heavily worn cent. EDS. Struck 15% off center to K-7.5 leaving the entire date off the planchet.

No verdigris and the only marks are a small planchet chip or pit over the left edge of the O in ONE and a collection of microscopic pits just right of the F in OF. Slightly glossy medium chocolate brown fading to olive in protected areas. Possibly recolored but the toning is attractive. MDS. The reverse is misaligned to K-7. A tough variety that's very difficult to find in higher grades, and this one comes with a nice provenance.

1798 S-156 R5+ Small 8, Style I Hair, Reverse of 1796 Basal State-1. Heavily worn and there are strong contact marks covering the face and a deep cut near the rim at K-8 on the reverse. In spite of the heavy wear and strong contact marks, the surfaces are mostly smooth and glossy. Fortunately the date is strong and the single leaf feature at the top of the wreath is still visible. Enough of the details are clear to easily attribute this piece as the very rare S-156 die variety. Nothing more than a hole filler, but it is a very tough hole, indeed.
