Apollo 15, 1971, 3-D "Landing Site" Lunar Topographical Map (30x37") This massive 3-D plastic map is an exact 1:12,500 scale reproduction of the Apollo 15 landing site at Hadley Rille. Produced by the US Army Typographical Command at the request of the Department of Defence, this map was used to familiarize the Apollo astronauts with what they would see when they approached the landing site during landing. The map also gave the astronauts a view of the surroundings around their landing site since they would mainly have tunnel vision during the actual landing itself. Extensive faults and quite fragile, but an important piece of memorabilia. This is only the second or third time we have ever seen one of these maps. NOTE: This piece will require special UPS packing and shipping due size and fragility (weight is negligible). Domestic sale recommended as we cannot guarantee what customs will do to the piece if shipped overseas.

Lot 501
Apollo 17, FLOWN Lunar Surface US Flag (4x6") in unmounted condition. A copy (?) of a 1975 typed letter on NASA letterhead stationary is included that reads, in part: "Dear Al: This flag of our nation flew to the moon aboard the spaceships "America" and "Challenger", Apollo XVII, December 6-19, 1972….Please accept this flag with the pride the heritage of our country so righteously deserves". The letter is signed by Gene Cernan and Ron Evans. There has been question raised in the past as to the legitimacy of flags distributed with this letter as only one presentation letter has shown up previously. This letter, addressed to a second NASA employee, should dispel any questions that collectors may have about this piece. Elsewhere in this sale, we have an Apollo 14 Flown beta cloth helmet bag distributed with a similar type letter. This seems to imply that, although rare, similar distribution of flown artifacts by the crews happened and are completely legitimate.

Apollo 17, 1972, Gene Cernan Inscription and Autograph (framed to 21x17") on an attractive "Earth" photograph (showing the Middle East and Africa). This matted presentation piece has been inscribed by Cernan: "Our Home - As seen from the E/LS (?) of Apollo XVII - Dec 1972" and "To Gail - To share the memories of this moment with friends like you make it all worthwhile. With Best Wishes / Gene Cernan". The photograph has faded over the last 35 years (as is usual) and the mat shows some staining at the bottom, but the piece is a heartfelt momento of the time and a great addition to any collection. Give it a good home as was originally intended.
