Blank Planchet for Mature Head Cent 1843-1857, F12. Glossy chocolate brown. Smooth except for some of the usual tiny planchet chips on both sides, but there is a thin dig on one side that caused a subtle bulge on the opposing side. The rims are upset and wide, which is consistent with the planchets made for Mature Head large cents, 1843-1857. Weight 164.7 grains.
Estimated Value $60-UP.

Lot 662
Possible Reverse Brockage of Mature Head Large Cent G4. Rather glossy light chocolate brown. One side of the planchet is blank (or so worn down that any designs that were present are no longer discernible). The other side shows an incuse impression of the reverse of a Mature Head large cent (1843-1857) suggesting it's a reverse brockage. This incuse impression is slightly off center to the top. Both sides display numerous contact marks, including several obvious scratches on the "reverse" where the incuse design is located. The planchet weighs 187.2 grains, which is considerably heavier than the 168-grain standard for plain edge large cents, and the diameter is 27.0 millimeters, slightly less than the usual 27.5-28.0 millimeters found on Mature Head large cents. I have to conclude that the planchet was (most likely) not made for a Mature Head large cent, and that the incuse "brockage" was added outside the mint. But it's an interesting piece, nonetheless.
Estimated Value $20-UP.
