1825 N-3 R3 VF30. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with satiny mint frost peeking through in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are perfectly smooth, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. The only notable mark is a small, dull nick just right of the second S in STATES. LDS. The small die chip (lump on the coin) is still visible under star 6, and there are fine die cracks from the curl at star 13 to the top of the 5 and another from the bust tip into the field toward the dentils under star 1. Both cracks are very light. In addition there is a very thin double profile (from die bounce) on the chin, lips, and nose. Quite nice for the grade offering excellent eye appeal.

In addition there are three faint bisecting scratches on the obverse intersecting just left of the earlobe plus some light scratches around the line under CENT and a small rim bruise at ED in UNITED. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive, void of any notable distractions. Glossy light olive and bluish steel brown, possibly lightly cleaned and retoned. The minutely rough area on the reverse is toned a slightly darker shade of reddish chocolate. MDS. The date and legends are bold. This piece offers nice eye appeal for the grade in spite of the imperfections.

1831 N-12 R1 F15 but made into a Gear. Glossy chocolate brown. Smooth surfaces with only a few small marks, including a shallow punch just right of the center cot on the reverse. Nothing special except that it was made into a gear, and the machine work is excellent. The work appears to have been done for a specific purpose, not merely whimsy, and accomplished long ago. Beyond that, it's your guess.

1851 Large Cent with Danish West Indies Counterstamp AG3. The large cent is moderately corroded causing many of the cent details to be weak or distorted, but the crowned FR/VII counterstamp (for Frederik VII of Denmark, 1848-1863) is clear and deeply impressed. Rather glossy chocolate brown with shallow greenish verdigris in protected areas, including in the recesses of the counterstamp. This stamp was for the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) and it was applied to circulating U.S. and world coins between 1849-1859. Many counterfeits of this rare counterstamp are known, and this cent comes with a tag from NGC stating "NOT ENCAPSULATED" and "AUTHENTICITY UNVERIFIABLE." The piece looks good, but we defer to NGC on this one. Careful inspection is recommended.
