Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 538
1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with Periods PCGS graded "Genuine". Sharpness near G5, even better on the reverse, but the surfaces are slightly rough on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No verdigris and the only signs of contact are a few tiny rim nicks, a light rim bruise over the N in UNITED, and a thin horizontal pinscratch across the bottom of the reverse. The best identifying mark is a patch of shallow corrosion under the E in STATES. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. The date is weak and barely readable but the legends are stronger with STATES the only notable exception. Our grade is net AG3.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Very slightly sharper but there are a few contact marks, including a pair of sharp nicks on the portrait and one more at the bottom of the I in LIBERTY, plus a pitmark on the denominator of the fraction. Lot 543
1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge G6. Flipover Double Strike. Sharpness F15 or slightly better on the lower half of the obverse, but the upper half of the obverse and the entire reverse are covered with light to moderate corrosion. Shallow greenish verdigris shows around the date and under the bust tip. The only notable sign of contact is a small rim nick left of the bottom of the cap. Partly glossy dark olive mixed with lighter chocolate toning on the lower half of the obverse where the surface is smooth and attractive. This piece was struck slightly off center to K-5, then flipped over and struck a second time with the second strike reasonably well centered on the planchet. Undertype from the initial strike shows on both sides. TATES from STATES is visible slightly above LIBER and the bust tip from that initial strike is visible at CA in AMERICA. In addition, the 17 of the date from the first strike can be made out where the denominator of the fraction should be located. Too bad about the corrosion because this is a very rare type of mint error.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

Lot 544
1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge G6. Double Struck with Rotation. A few points sharper with microscopic roughness covering the fields and protected areas plus a few hairline scratches, mostly on the reverse. No verdigris and the scratches blend into the natural toning. The only other defects are a few light rim bruises, strongest at the top of the cap. Rather glossy steel brown and light chocolate with dark olive brown toning in the protected areas. Double struck with a 20-degree rotation between the impressions. Strong evidence of the two strikes shows at the bust and cap. The top of an extra "5" is visible is clearly impressed on the bust tip of the dominant strike. A neat mint error. Weight 173.3 grains.

1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap G6. Several points sharper, especially on the obverse, but there are numerous light rim bruises and dull rim nicks around both sides, and some of them have been smoothed down to minimize their impact. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive showing only a few trivial contact marks. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. The date is strong except for the bottom of the 6 thanks to the usual heavy die swelling in that area, and the legends are clear. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CCW.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap AG3. A couple points sharper, especially on the obverse, but there are small, relatively fresh digs on the 9 and 6 in the date that distort those digits a bit. Otherwise the date is clear. No roughness or verdigris and the only other defects are some light contact marks at the R in LIBERTY. The legends are readable although some of the letters are weak. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel.

1796 S-104 R3 Draped Bust with LIHERTY Obverse VG10. Sharpness VF35 but parts of the planchet show shallow erosion, strongest at ERT above the head. Extremely fine roughness also covers much of both sides, but overall the eye appeal is not too bad in spite of the obvious imperfections. There are faint traces of greenish verdigris on both sides and on the edge, but the verdigris is visible only with the aid of a glass. Rather glossy mix of light and dark chocolate tones blended with some reddish chocolate and olive. MDS. The LIHERTY error (B over inverted B forming an "H") is clear. The date and legends are strong. An acceptable example of this popular "Redbook" variety.

1798 S-167 R1 Style II Hair, Large 8 F12. Several points sharper but there is extremely fine roughness hidden under the glossy dark olive and lighter chocolate brown patina. The devices are several shades lighter than the fields, and the two-tone contrast accents the details and adds to the eye appeal. No notable marks or verdigris. LDS, Breen state VI, with clear die cracks on both sides and a cud break connecting the first T in STATES to the rim above. Struck slightly off center to K-9.

1798 S-175 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded AU-50. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas, especially on the reverse. A small puff of darker olive toning shows in the field before the eye. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a couple old, light hairline scratches at LI, another even lighter one slanting from the temple to the upper lip, and one between the F in OF and the adjacent A. All these fine scratches blend perfectly into the attractive natural toning. LDS, Breen state VI, with a strong cud break connecting the U in UNITED to the rim. All the fine die cracks described by Breen for the latest die state are clear. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45. An important cent, CC#5 for the variety. Apparently a new discovery, not listed by Noyes or Bland.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

Lot 557
1798 S-178 R5+ Style II Hair with Small 8, Reverse of 1796 Fair-2. The obverse is AG3 while the reverse shows much more wear and grades only Basal State-1. The planchet is smooth, completely free of corrosion or verdigris, and the only marks are a few inconsequential rim bruises. The date is easily readable even though the bottom is starting to wear into the rim, and the die cracks through the date and up from the bust are easily visible. The only designs that remain visible on the reverse are at the top where TATE and the all-important single terminal leaves still show (the Reverse of 1796). Late die state. Recolored glossy chocolate and olive brown. A well-worn but easily attributable example of this rare and very popular "Redbook" variety.

Lot 559
1798 S-187 R1 Style II Hair, Small 8. NGC graded MS-65. Lustrous light golden olive and steel brown with hints of very faded mint color showing through in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Great eye appeal, just a few minor marks from perfect. These include a small spot of darker olive brown toning above the N in ONE, a speck of carbon inside the C in AMERICA, and a fine scratch near the dentil tips from below the 1 in the denominator to above the U in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II. The usual die cracks arcing through TY and in the field before the portrait are clear but the small cud break at the dentils opposite the chin has not formed. Called MS65 "Choice" and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #33953. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland/Breen census. Our grade is MS62.
Estimated Value $25,000-UP.

1799 S-189 R2 VG7. Sharpness F15 but covered with fine roughness, strongest in the protected areas. There are traces of very shallow planchet scale in some of the protected areas but no verdigris. The only notable marks are a small rim nick left of the upper edge of the hair ribbon and a couple tiny nicks at the base of the 17 in the date. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. The obverse displays a considerable amount of gloss thanks to some very light burnishing done long ago, but the reverse is closer to matte. E-MDS, Breen state II. The shallow lump over T in CENT is present but weak and there is no die crumbling in the dentils at F-A. The bottom of the date is relatively weak, which Breen mentions as normal for this die state, while the legends on both sides are complete and clear.

1803 S-247 R3 F15. Sharpness EF45 but there are a dozen small, shallow pits on the obverse plus a couple larger ones on the reverse, and fine corrosion covers the lower right part of the reverse. The obverse fields are covered with fine hairline scratches that have been mostly burnished away, all in an attempt to minimize the effects of the pitting. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. The details remain quite sharp and the eye appeal is not as bad as the description might imply. Nonetheless, this piece is far from perfect. EDS, Breen state I. 1804 S-266a R4+ PCGS graded "Genuine". Sharpness VG10 but there are numerous small nicks plus several very old scratches scattered over both sides. The scratches most have occurred well before the coin was removed from circulation because they show mostly in the fields and protected areas and fade or disappear completely when crossing over the devices. Very glossy chocolate brown, possibly retoned but the color is attractive and natural-looking. The date and legends are complete and strong. Certainly not perfect but this piece offers eye appeal far better than the technical description implies. E-MDS, Breen state II. Some die clashmarks show before the neck and a faint die crack connects the tops of MERI, but there are no cud breaks. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG7.
