Lot 2021		1800. . BD-2, Breen-6438, blunt 1 in date. NGC graded EF-40. Basically untoned with the surface showing minor roughness from its time in circulation. Even color throughout. A scarce early Capped Bust, Large Eagle five. Dannreuther suggests a mintage of 7,500 to 12,500 for the variety, with perhaps 175 to 250 known, giving it a rating of Rarity-3+ (PCGS # 8082) . Lot 2022		1805. . BD-1 Close Date, Breen-6445. PCGS Genuine. Our grade is Sharpness of AU-58 and cleaned. The first die pair listed in Dannreuther, the date has a Perfect 1, with numerals close. On the reverse, the defining feature is a leaf that touches I in UNITED (on BD-2, the I is well away); IT close. This is the most available variety of 1805 with perhaps 200 known. Lot 2023		1806. Round 6. . BD-6, Breen-6447. NGC graded AU Details improperly cleaned. Some mint frost remains, lightly toned. Although this is by far the most commonly found 1806 Capped Bust, Large Eagle fie, and also the most seen variety amopng all the Draped Bust coins, it remains as the only die variety with the Round or Knobbed top 6 in the date. Dannreuther places the rarity at R-2, implying that 600 to 900 are known; in the 1990-2005 period covered by his Auction Appearances data, 323 were auctioned. Stars are layed out 7 + 6, which is key, as the only use of this obverse. The reverse is carried over from BD-5, one of the Pointed 6 varieties. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500. Lot 2025		1807 $5 Capped Bust. Bust left. NGC graded MS-62. Well struck, light golden color and semi reflective lustrous surfaces. Popular type coin. There is something to be said about early gold, and early half eagles specifically, that whets the excitement of the true numismatist. Many are rare in absolute terms, and those that are not are sanctified by growing demand from Type collectors as a result. This is a choice example of a coin destined for a quality collection. It deserves attention as the first date of the new Capped Bust to Left type. The coin was designed by John Reich, and follows in the tradition of Reich's other denominations, $2.50 Quarter Eagle (1808 only). But more to the point, although not rare in overall, the 1807 Bust Left half eagle is a treat to behold when as nice as the present specimen. Pop 55; 54 finer (PCGS # 8092) . Lot 2030		1850-C. Weak C. NGC graded MS-60. Frosty and lightly toned. This scarce, lustrous 1850-C half eagle is a wonderful example of a mid-19th century rarity with frosty greenish gold luster. Very sharply struck with full obverse and reverse design definition. Only the typical (meaning, not heavy or noticeable) very minor abrasions and hairlines are noted. From a mintage of 63,591 coins, however, only six to eight examples may be all that have survived in Mint State. A definite showpiece for the Charlotte Mint collector and specialist. Lot 2032		1870. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. A marvelous gem example with full glittering mirror surfaces against well frosted raised devices and all untoned. A rare low mintage date as a mere 4,000 were struck for general circulation and only 35 Proofs were made. Housed in NGC holder 1551341-004. Brilliant untoned golden surfaces. A very rare date in the long Liberty Coronet half eagle series that spans the years 1839 to 1907. The 1870 issue had for decades certainly been overlooked by specialized collectors (although a few wise "name" collectors from the last century saw its potential). Today, the 1870 Proof is widely recognized for what it is, an opportunity that should not be ignored! Only 35 Proofs were originally sold to collectors, and while Akers and others fail to give indication for the numbers of survivors, Breen estimates that perhaps a dozen survive today. We believe there may be even fewer than a dozen, and we quote Akers concluding comment about this date, "…very rare and for some unknown reason [1870 Proofs] have appeared at auction less often than similar or lower mintage Proofs of many other dates." When one turns to the certification services, their data further reinforces this belief as most have been certified no higher than Proof 63 or Proof 64 by PCGS or NGC. Included in the short roster of other Proofs of this issue are: (1) Scanlon:2334 (Stack�s 10/73), described as "flawless," and bringing $4,400. Later this piece appeared in Bowers' 11/2000 Bass IV:504 where it was graded PCGS Proof 64 (2) Garrett 3/76:430, realized $5,000, possibly reappearing in Bowers 9/95:1418, again as PCGS Proof 64 (3) Carter:683, $13,200 (4) Clapp, Eliasberg, Trompeter (5) Heritage 8/95:7818, PCGS Proof 63 with several lint marks in lower left of reverse, $17,600. The Trompeter coin, not auctioned at the time (only the gold dollars through $4 gold pieces were sold in 1992) later was placed by private treaty. This gorgeous Gem Proof 66 Cameo specimen may even be the Clapp, Eliasberg, and as the Trompeter piece it is reappearing after many years. A candidate for "Finest Known". Pop 1; none finer In fact NGC reports the second finest graded as Pf-64 (PCGS # 88465) . Note: When Ed Trompeter was forming his complete collection of proof gold coinage from 1858 to 1915, this coin eluted him for decades. It was one of the last coins he needed for completion. Lot 2039		1882-CC. NGC graded MS-61. Well struck and untoned. Only 82,817 struck. A nicely frosty coin that retains the desirable mint bloom which is so often lacking from this series. The surfaces are about par for the grade with minor signs of handling or scuffs to the luster. Sharp as nearly always seen, with no signs of striking softness on the devices. Coinage for the year came to a halt after a fairly substantial eighty-two thousand were struck, virtually all of which crossed the threshold into circulation. A few were set aside, how or why no one knows, including the present MS61 to delight the senses and draw attention from the specialists of the Half Eagle or Carson City series. Lot 2044		1890. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. Lovely shades of rich golden toning. Only 88 Proofs struck. Outstanding cameo contrast on a Gem Proof, with mile high frost on Liberty surrounded by ocean deep mirror fields. The surfaces are outstanding, and show no signs of handling to distract the eye. Struck with the familiar egg shell crackle finish in the fields, often called "orange peel", the fields show texture yet are perfectly flat in appearance. This must have been quite a marvel to see the process that accomplished this effect. Lot 2049		1901. PCGS graded Proof 66 Deep Cameo. Magnificent rich golden color throughout. Only 140 struck. Beginning in 1902 (the year after this coin) on the gold Half Eagles, and continuing through the end of the Proof issues in 1907, the Philadelphia Mint struck Proofs with semi-brilliant, if not completely brilliant devices. This finish, which was born out of a change in production methods at the Mint, is that which is typically seen on survivors of this 1901 delivery, but the present coin has strong Cameo contrast, instead, from the devices. A nice overlay of mint frost highlights the fully brought up devices. The fields are deeply mirrored with reflectivity that shines powerfully at all angles. Intricately detailed and satiny, with splashes of beautiful orange patina over both sides. A few minor scuffs in the luster at the first two stars, and a trivial surface flake (as made) near the eagle�s beak require magnification to be brought to the viewer's attention.
