Lot 1587
1889-CC. NGC graded AU-55. Well struck with plenty of luster still remaining, all untoned. Popular Key Date. Silver dollar issuance terminated in 1885 but began again in 1889 at the Carson City office creating a three-year hiatus when there were no CC dollars made. Some point to a few irregularities that had popped up which caused the Treasury Department to close the Mint while an inquiry was made. Others to the installation of a Democratic administration overseen by Grover Cleveland whose budget-cutting included the Carson mint. In 1889, Cleveland left office. In 1889, a Republican administration returned to power. In 1889, the Carson Mint received new funding. Coincidence? Upon reopening, there was only time to strike 350,000 silver dollars before the next calendar year began. Hence, this date's infrequent appearance at auction, especially in choicer grades (PCGS # 7190) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400.

Lot 1588
1890-CC. PCGS graded MS-65 Prooflike. A blast white gem. This is a sparkling silver specimen radiating mint bloom, powerfully struck and impeccably preserved. Unlike most which are not quite fully struck, this marvel of precision minting shows all regions crisply detailed including the centers. Furthermore, 1890-CC tends to be frosty. Only a few coins were struck by new dies, as this one must have been to display such fine prooflike originality. All dies are polished when made. Once inserted into the equipment and a production run started, the die polish soon wears off on Morgan Dollar dies, leaving the finished coins lustrous or frosty. A small fraction of any year’s mintage, often a very small fraction, has this degree of lovely prooflike reflection in the fields. Contrasted by raised, frosted devices. Pop 13; none finer (PCGS # 7199) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,300.

1893-CC. NGC graded MS-62 CAC Approved. Froslty and totally white. The challenging 1893-CC has a low mintage of only 677,000 pieces, and it is an issue that is scarce in all grades, Uncirculated or worn. Rolls of mostly substandard examples of this issue were occasionally obtained by dealers until the 1970s, but very few quantity offerings have been available in recent years. Today, the most often seen 1893-CC dollars tend to cluster in the MS60 to MS63 grades. An attractive offering for the collector of Morgan dollars! (PCGS # 7222) .

1901. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A blast white Gem Cameo Proof! Only 813 struck. This date is significant because business strikes are scarce in Mint condition, which puts more stress on the Proofs. As it is, Proofs were struck in small numbers. This beautiful Gem displays a silvery brilliance untopped by any others in its Proof 65 class, brilliance over remarkably clean surfaces that impresses us with its fresh originality. Struck with systematic exactness throughout, there is no need to ignore the central part of the eagle’s breast where a somewhat rounded impression is sometimes left by even Proof dies. This 1901 is decidedly bold in the centers. Pop 6; 9 finer (PCGS # 7336) .

1921-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Mostly white and blazing throughout. Last year of the dollars designed by George T. Morgan. It contains 0.77344 troy ounces of silver, and was the successor to the Seated Liberty Dollar of 1840-73. Morgan Dollars were struck in 1878-1904, but then not been regularly minted again until 1921. With the passage of the Pittman Act in 1918, the mintage of dollar coins was enabled to start again. Prior to the design and acceptance of the Peace Dollar, the Morgan Dollar was minted again in 1921 at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mint. The coins differ in appearance from the 1904 and early ones, the Mint having redesigned the Master Die (PCGS # 7300) .
