1916. PCGS graded MS-63 Full Head. A lovely creamy-white specimen with satiny mint luster. In a new PCGS Shield holder. Popular Key Date and always in great demand. The standing Liberty quarter was "intended to typify in a measure the awakening interest of the country to its own protection," Mint Director von Engelken said at the time the coins first appeared early in 1917. "In the new design Liberty is shown a full-length figure, front view, with head turned toward the left, stepping forward to the gateway of the country …The left arm of the figure of Liberty is upraised, bearing the shield in the attitude of protection, from which the covering is being drawn. The right hand bears the olive branch of peace."
Issued only at Philadelphia, and then in very low numbers, survivors were saved in medium large numbers as the first of their kind. However, since only 52,000 were minted, even a large percentage of that figure is still quite low in comparison to other dates in the series. Pop 91 (PCGS # 5705) . Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000. 1916. NGC AU Details improperly cleaned. A pleasing looking coin that was probably cleaned decades ago and now lightly toned. Popular Key Date and always in demand. Some might even want to say this is a noteworthy example of this classic 20th century rarity. Only a small minority of the upper grade survivors of this important Standing Quarter issue qualify as possessing full head definition, an attribute of the design which the Mint revised with the 1917 coinage (incorporating a brand-new hub). This example will toned in time, and exhibits acceptable surfaces. Strike definition is about average for the issue. In addition to the full date and most other details, the other design elements in the eagle are also nicely detailed. All of the rivets on the outer shield show but tend to be weak, as always. The surfaces on this specimen aren’t all that bad. Specimens of the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter dollar are far and few between. Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500. View details and enlarged photos

1917. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Head CAC Approved. Well struck and fully white. In an OGH. Typical satiny surface for the issue, the ice-white surfaces are nearly pristine with few singularly distracting bagmarks. A munificent strike, is included on this care-free specimen, as we report freedom from the usual marks typical. And this is why it is a coin to jump at before it's sale is history. 1917-D. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head CAC Approved. Nice bold strike and totally white. In an OGH. You may recollect that, when you first started collecting coins, you came across photographs of the lovely Type 1 Standing Liberty quarter design. But little did you realize then how truly impressive these are when seen first-hand, not simply in a photograph. The present specimen is likely an early strike from fresh dies, judging from the details. The surfaces are satin silver. Pop 261; 133 finer (PCGS # 5709) . Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500. 1917-D. Type 2. NGC graded MS-66 CAC Approved. Lovely blue and golden toning around the borders. In an old holder. The D-mint 1917 Type Two quarter sells for approximately twice as much as its P-mint counterpart, yet it is three to five times scarcer, especially when full head. This is an impressively struck coin MS66 that has a pronounced frosty finish on both obverse and reverse. The centers are generally free from color while the peripheries are toned as described. An exceptionally good value in the Type Two Full Head category. Notice the low population: Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,200. View details and enlarged photos

1917-S. Type 2. NGC graded MS-65 Full Head. The rivits are also complete. Lovely delicate golden-russet toning on both sides. The 1917-S has a mintage in line with others struck during World War One. It is actually quite an elusive issue in high grade and with full detail on Liberty's head. The head details on this piece are fully brought up while the mint luster gleams over each side. Mainly brilliant under the color, the peripheries display sharp rim and ornamental detail with a full strong date present. Pop 22; 16 finer. Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,400. 1918-S, 8 over 7. PCGS graded AU-50. CAC Approved. Popular key date with a hint of light toning. As is the case with most 20th century overdates, the 1918/7-S was caused by the use of two working obverse hubs with different dates. Presumably, the die was made in late 1917 or early 1918, during the transition between the 1917 and 1918 dates. Light silvery color without major toning; modest weakness on the high points as occurs with regularity in the dates in the ‘teens, including the rare 1918/7 overdate. Some luster still evident around the devices (PCGS # 5726) . Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500. View details and enlarged photos Check results on similar lots

1919-D. NGC graded MS-65 CAC Approved. The head is almost full. A gorgeous example with a touch of light golden toning. In an old holder. One of the scarcer dates from this very popular series and a unforgettable coin for the specialist. The surfaces are a delight to behold, with nice hues over luster. As to the strike, this one is quite strong, with much head detail present, quite strong for this date and Denver Mint. It is apparent that this coin was set aside long ago and numismatically cherished from that time forward. Such quality is never easily available, and can seldom be duplicated without dedicated searching. An refreshing jewel for the specialist who appreciates great surfaces, luster, strike and the 1919-D pedigree. Pop 26. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200. View details and enlarged photos

Lot 1115 |

1919-S. NGC graded MS-64 CAC Approved. The head is nearly full. Frosty with a hint of gold toning. In an old style holder. There are several explanations given as to why the 1919-S Quarter (and its Denver counterpart) is so scarce. Two of these bear mentioning: First, mintage had reached unprecedented levels during the prosperous wartime years of 1917-8. As an predictable aftermath, few new coins were required in 1919 out West, since there was a superabundance of war coinage in circulation. A second possibility revolves around the plummeting agricultural prices from their unsustainable 1919-20 highs (again, a result of the First World War). Western farming states entered upon a period of slowing activity; and slow activity translates into low demand for coinage from the mints into the banks of issue. (1921 and 1922 are seen as the low point in this activity.) Pop 26. Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700. View details and enlarged photos

1920-S. PCGS graded MS-66 CAC Approved. The head is about full. Intensely lustrous and creamy-white in color. In an OGH. Like other early Standing Liberty Quarters of this caliber, this MS66 1920-S has better-than-usual definition the main devices, though with typical flat head on Liberty. The fields are swimming with luster, which add even more to the brightness of the silvery originality. Essentially defect-free, this is a very appealing example of this underrated and often poorly-produced S-mint quarter. Pop 15; 2 in 67 (PCGS # 5738) . Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000. Lot 1122 |
|
1921. NGC graded MS-65 Full Head. Boldly struck and frosty, mostly whwite. The surfaces are highly lustrous and each side has radiance that swirls and alternates across the surface. A dampened impression is often founded from the weak rebound of the dies that made 1921’s coinage; however, rather than being halfhearted, this particular coin's design is boldly crisp. Pop 19; 9 in 66 FH.
Historic note: Mintage in 1921 for denominations except the Silver Dollar fell markedly from prior years. American business experienced a short, sharp depression during the year. No doubt this was delayed aftereffects from the inflationary war years of 1914-18 World War I. With manufacturing and retailing now at a low ebb there was little demand for new coins. Hence, the hard-to-find 1921-dated issues, like the delightful Quarter Dollar offered here. Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000. View details and enlarged photos

1923-S. NGC graded MS-65 Full Head. Light hints of gentle golden toning. A very choice example for this scarce date. In an old holder. We have sometimes fallen prey to scourges of hyperbole. However, in this instance, this '23-S is a genuine condition rarity that is on the odd occasion encountered in Superb Gem quality but even Gem 65s are becoming scarcer by the year. In the past two decades, we have only handled a few of this quality. Scintillating luster is accented by the toning. The frosty surfaces are virtually pristine Pop 22; 2 in 66 FH, 6 in 67 FH. 1923-S. PCGS graded MS-65 CAC Approved. A frosty white gem with the head about ¾ full. In an OGH. This is a lovely, solidly graded Standing Liberty quarter dollar. The mint luster is thick and frosted and beams with silvery radiance over each side, the obverse devices are bold throughout. Crisply defined on the reverse as well which just a bit of striking softness on the eagle's chest feathers at the junction of the eagle's left (facing) wing – this being a high spot on the coin and pretty much every Type 2 offering has minor weakness here.
