Lot 313
Large 38 Star Flag. 20-foot-long flag stamped "Patented Apr. 26th 1870 AMERICAN ENSIGN 20-FT." Stars and stripes are stamped with dye; stars are in seven rows of five and one row of three. The date refers to the press-dyeing process patented in 1870; rights were owned by The United States Bunting Company of Lowell, Massachusetts, which produced the first wool bunting made in the U.S. (instead of England). This flag may very well have been flown on a U.S. battleship. Moderate toning and wear to the material, as would be expected from a flag of this age. The 38-star flag was used from 1876, when Colorado became the 38th state to enter the Union, to 1889, when both North and South Dakota became states.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.

Patriotic Textiles, c. 1907 and 1908. Two textiles, both printed by Schwab & Wolf of New York. (1) A colorful 22¾ x 23 in. printing that shows two bald eagles carrying a flag aloft. The poem at lower left reads: "Look! Americans, Look! Look up to the sky! / Don't you see it waving there, far, far up on high? / See! See! The Flag of Freedom! The Flag / of the True! / Look! Patriots! 'Tis the glorious red, white, and blue." Light rubbing and wear along the vertical centerfold and the outer edges. From the Mastai Collection, with his inkstamp and inventory number at lower right. (2) A colorful 23 x 23 in., printing on coarse linen of four American battleships, guns at ready. Waterstained on the left side, but the staining blends in perfectly with the clouds and does not affect the overall appearance. The only noticeable flaw is a small hole in the upper right corner.
