Pershing, John J. "Black Jack". Typed Letter Signed "John J. Pershing" on "American Expeditionary Forces / Office of the Commander-In-Chief" letterhead, 7¾ x 5¾ in., France, Aug. 30, 1918, France, Very Fine. Marked "Personal," thanking Mr. Sidney B. Veit for his congratulations on Pershing's having received the Grand Croix de la Legion d'Honneur. Boldly signed. Original transmittal envelope has purple censor's stamp. With 10 x 8 in. photo of Pershing in uniform; ragged edges and tear toward right margin.

Rickenbacker, Edward V (1890-1973) World War I flying ace, race car driver, and president of Eastern Air Lines. Three items signed "Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker": two First Day Covers, one honoring the U.S. Air Force Academy and also signed by Maj. Gen. W.S. Stone, Supt USAF Academy; and one honoring the 50th anniversary of powered flight and also signed by Gen. Curtis LeMay and another USAF general (name illegible). Also a 1941 TLS as president of Eastern Air Lines, thanking Mr. Pitt for his newspaper. All fine.

Rickenbacker, Edward V. Program Signed, "Col. Eddie Rickenbacker" on a "MOBILIZATION" program for the 1943 Red Cross War Fund, 10¼ x 7 in. New York, NY. Rickenbacker's bold signature measures a full 5½ in. across. Matted and framed (along with an image of Rickenbacker in a plane, a 60 cent U.S. stamp, and an engraved, explanatory plaque) to an overall size of 22½ x 18½ in.

U.S. Military Academy West Point Diploma and Shako. 20 x 13¾in." partially printed on vellum, completed in manuscript. The diploma for Ellison B. Deans, Jr. of North Carolina, Feb. 14, 1908. Signed at the bottom by twelve of Dean's professors. Scattered foxing and soiling. With a West Point Cadet's black shako with brass-colored trim, c. 1923, 7 in. tall with 6 in. plume. West Point metal crest at front, with "DUTY HONOR COUNTRY WEST POINT MDCCCII USMA" when the crest was switched to face the right side. Brass-colored "CADET USMA" buttons and marked on inside brim: "THE CADET STORE WEST POINT N.Y." Minor wear to surfaces and edges.

Proclamation to the Belgians to Allow the German Army to Pass. Broadside in French and Flemish signed in type by General (Otto) von Emmich (1848-1915) as Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Meuse, 34 x 24½ in., n.d. (shortly before he began the siege of Liège, Aug. 4-16, 1914). He expresses his regret that German troops have been forced to cross the Belgian border because Belgium's neutrality has been violated by the French. He reminds the Belgians, "Do you remember the glorious days of Waterloo where it was the German armies who contributed to founding and establishing the independence and prosperity of your Country?" He says that the German army must have free passage and will consider the destruction of bridges, tunnels, and railroads as hostile acts. More content on the good intentions of the Germans and of their great estime and sympathy. Overall toning. Housed in a thin black frame. Von Emmich is known as the victor of Liège. He was the first German soldier during WWI to receive the Pour le Mérite award.
