Commemorative Silver Coins

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1104
1900 Lafayette Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. A splendid gem specimen glimmering with undistrubed satiny mint luster which is further enhanced by a touch of golden sunset toning. Certainly one of the finer gem specimens we have handled.

America's first Commemorative Silver Dollar, the designs were by Charles E. Barber after an engraving of Houdon's bust of Washington. On the reverse, Barber depicted the Lafayette equestrian statue at the Paris Exposition of 1900. Lafayette Dollars were sold to defray part of the cost of completing Paul Wayland Bartlett's statue of the French General, then under construction in Paris for display at the exposition. Out of an authorization for 50,000 pieces, 36,000 were sold, the remainder being melted. Very few Gems at the 65 level or beyond remain, as readers can ascertain here: Pop 186; 60 in 66, 8 in 67 (PCGS # 9222) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

Lot 1105
1900 Lafayette Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nicely toned on both sides. This is a nearly blemish-free case in point of the desirable Lafayette Silver Dollar Commemorative in this grade: satiny white in color under the modest toning, with mint bloom that captures the full effect of the careful preservation since it was made. The portraits are of Generals George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette, the latter a French aristocrat and adventurer who provided major support for the Americans in the Revolutionary War. The wealthy French citizen came to America to support the Revolution. He befriended General Washington and was with him at Valley Forge (PCGS # 9222) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.

Lot 1118
1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Nicely toned. Fully lustrous - an important and rare feature for this not all that well preserved 1928 Commemorative issue (many were mishandled) -- the surfaces display dominant pearl-white color supporting the toning. Meticulous strike on each device is what collectors hope for in a Hawaiian Half Dollar, and this coin, unlike those that don't quite make the "full" grade, is extra crisp, much sharper than an average specimen. For that reason, the numerical condition is exact.

Only 10,008 1928 "Captain Cook" Half Dollars (as collectors in our fiftieth state like to refer to them) were coined; of these, many, many found a home in change purses or curiosity boxes, they being, for the most part, sold to non-collectors in the islands. Once in the public's hands many got banged about and abraded. To this day, well-toned About Uncirculated specimens turn up regularly at coin stores in Honolulu. Having that in mind you have before you one of the few sparkling Gem Mint State examples left. Pop 347; 80 finer (PCGS # 9309) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A touch of light cream color toning. A lovely satiny mint gem with shimmering luster. One point removed for a small mark near Cook's nose. Bold relief from a sharp blow by the dies. Captain Cook visited the Hawaiian Islands twice, once in 1778, and again the next year. His landing site was Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island (PCGS # 9309) .

1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Delicate golden toning adds to its appeal. Satin-finish rather than cartwheel-style luster on a lovely coin like the sparkle off a sword waving in the air. Keeping the same metaphor, we see clear-cut devices that point to it having been giving a proper strike by the Commemorative dies. Struck in and dated 1915, the S mintmark lies just to the left of the date, as it does in the Standing Liberty Quarters introduced to the public only a year later.Pop 229; 82 finer (PCGS # 9357) .

1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Soft pastel toning on the obverse in lovely shades, all adorning the satiny freshness that is the gem-level luster underneath. At the time of the Panama-Pacific Exposition, the San Francisco Mint managers thought of moving a coining press to the Exposition to produce commemorative half dollars on the spot. However, reality intervened, and all the coins were struck in the standard facility (PCGS # 9357) .

Lot 1130
1926 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Intensely lustrous with a hint of light tone. Virtually as made and refreshingly clean for this issue which tends to fall below the Gem level due to strike weakness on many. In addition to shimmering luster in the fields and chalk-white devices, the fields are immaculate and satiny with much luster. Deficiency isn't in the cards when it comes to this coin's detail, either. In fact, deserving its MS66 grade from every standard used, "outstanding" is the word to describe the striking detail on the major devices. Finally, heed the extremely low NGC census: Pop 12; 7 finer, 6 in 66*, 1 in 66+* (PCGS # 9374) .
