$5 Gold

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1485
1795. Small eagle. . BD-3, Breen-6412. Sharpness of AU-50. Well struck with signs of old cleaning and some minor roughness. A pleasing looking "raw" coin easily worth our conservative estimate. While Mint reports give 1795's coinage total as 8,707, collectors have long known that the vast majority went into the melting pots over the years. Estimates of surviving numbers range all the way up to 5% or 8% of the original. Be that as it may, whatever the actual number extant, few can match the history, or absolute charm of a coin like the piece offered here. Anyone who has been searching for an affordable specimen which captures America as she looked out with youthful eyes upon the wide, competitive world of the eighteenth century will find this 1795 Half Eagle a splendid example.

Die Characteristics: Wide Date, Star 11 joins Y, 4 berries, upper leaf ends at foot of I. Dannreuther Rarity-3+ with 175 to 225 known.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.
