1909-S. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. A popular Key Date stored in an old Wayte Raymond folder for over 60 years. Only 309,000 minted. The 1909-S recorded the lowest mintage of any issue in the Indian cent series, less than half that of 1877. In the intervening years, coin collecting had increased in America so that by 1909 more were being saved. Today a Mint State 1909-S is not as rare as certain earlier dates. However, choice pieces that haven't been dipped or cleaned are elusive. Pop 106; 3 in 66 RB (PCGS # 2239) .

Lot 1170
1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red PQ. Full mint red and quite choice. A popular key date. Although the 1909-S V.D.B. Cent has the lowest mintage in the series, and has always been regarded as the key to the series, a fair number were set aside due to the change in designs that year. Still, when encountered the 1909-S V.D.B. Cents are usually in well worn grades, and often corroded. High grade, full Red specimens are under great demand from collectors of this popular series. This highly lustrous Gem features reddish-gold centers, bordered by more coppery golden color near the rims. Everything is fully original. The strike is decidedly above average, and free from surface imperfections, such as a mint-made planchet flaw or later spotting. As usual for business strikes for this important issue, devices are well struck throughout, unlike later S-mint Cents in the 1910s and 1920s, which feature weakness in the wheat ears for instance. In fact, the present Gem BU marks a rare appearance of this date in full red Mint State (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1171
1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Boldly struck with lots of mint red visible. A popular key date. We owe the Lincoln design to a coincidence, explains the Breen encyclopedia. "The Lithuanian immigrant sculptor Victor David Brenner developed an obsession with the martyred President, and during the years just before Lincoln's birth centennial he modeled portrait medals and plaques." These came to the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, and probably played a part in Brenner's winning a commission to portray him on the Panama Canal service medal. During the sittings, Brenner became a close friend of Roosevelt who invited him to submit Cent models.

Brenner's first reverse for the Cent was rejected by the Mint and so he brought the Mint Bureau a new reverse on February 17, 1909; this featured two stylized ears of durum wheat (the kind used today in making spaghetti). Brenner had signed his full name on the obverse model, but on Mint Director Leach's orders he removed his signature, substituting V.D.B. at bottom reverse. Owing largely to pressure from the White House, this version was approved, and the new cents appeared on Aug. 2, 1909 (PCGS # 2427) .
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500.

1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Lots of mint luster still present, with the surfaces glossy and very choice. Popular Key Date and always in demand as only 484,000 were minted (PCGS # 2426) .

Brief account of the Lincoln cent: In 1905, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was hired by the Mint to redesign the cent and the four gold coins, which did not require congressional approval. Two of Saint-Gaudens's proposed designs for the cent were eventually adapted for the gold pieces, but Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907 before submitting additional designs for the cent. In January 1909, the Mint engaged Brenner to design a cent depicting the late President Abraham Lincoln. Brenner's design was eventually approved, and the new coins were issued to great public interest on August 2, 1909.

Brenner's initials, on the reverse at its base, V.D.B., were deemed too prominent once the coins were issued, and were removed within days of the release. The initials were restored, this time on Lincoln's shoulder, in 1918.
