R.D. Van Arsdell finished his masterly tome Celtic Coinage of Britain in 1989. Over 600 pages, it is the best reference covering this diverse coinage. Lot 3025
Britain. Celtic Coinage, Trinovantes. Cunobeline, c. AD 10-20. Gold Stater (5.32 g) minted at Camulodunum (today's Colchester). Ear of grain. Reverse: Celticized horse right; above, branch. Van Arsdell 1931. Fine.

Sometimes, standard numismatic references disagree on terminology, dating and other parameters; which does a cataloguer choose? Here, "gold" is stated in a general manner, as the purity of gold in the Celtic series ranges from about 72% purity (.720 fineness) for imported Gallic staters to later British tribal coinage averaging less than 40% gold. For Celtic coinage, then, we use "gold" to indicate a plethora of gold alloys, whether they be yellow or red in color from their additives.
Estimated Value $400 - 450.

Lot 3026
Britain. Celtic Coinage, Trinovantes. Cunobeline, c. AD 10-20. Gold Quarter Stater (1.34 g) minted at Camulodunum. Ear of grain. Reverse: Celticized horse right; above, branch. Van Arsdell 1927-1 [as ER]. Choice Very Fine.

If the name Cunobeline (Cymbeline) seems familiar to the reader, it is most likely due to Shakespeare, who speaks of this stereotypical Celtic British "King" of the Trinovantes tribe in his tragedy/romance play "Cymbeline."
Estimated Value $400 - 600.

Sicily, Syracuse, c. 410 BC or somewhat later. AR Tetradrachm (17.15 g). Galloping quadriga right driven by charioteer; above, Nike flying left; in exergue, wheel. Reverse: Head left of Arethusa, hair bound with sphendone; around, dolphins swimming. Cf. Tudeer 37. Die-break on obverse. Fine / Very Fine.

During the transitional art period, the diverse depictions of Arethusa took precedence over the normally staid quadrigas. The mint utilized the obverse dies past their prime, and flans usually display numerous cracks or irregularities. These dies, though unsigned, are likely the work of the master celators Euainetos (obverse) and Eukleidas (reverse).
