1801 S-213 R2 NCS graded Fine details, environmental damage. Sharpness F12 or slightly better but there are spots of raised verdigris around ONE CENT and the ribbon below. Otherwise the surfaces are decent and mostly smooth, although there may be extremely fine roughness under the glossy very dark olive and steel patina. The highpoints are a slightly lighter shade of chocolate brown. The only contact marks are a few fine scratches in the field behind the portrait, all blending nicely into the natural patina. MDS, Breen state V, with a series of parallel die cracks from ERTY into the field before the face. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Our grade is net VG10.

1801 S-216 R1 VF20. Sharpness is VF35 but there is an obvious nick or shallow dig resting on top of the E in CENT. Mostly glossy dark olive and steel. Lot 880
1801 S-216 R1 F15. Sharpness VF20, even better in those areas that were properly struck, but there are myriad faint hairline scratches on the portrait. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and very attractive. Glossy medium chocolate brown with frosty luster peeking through in protected areas on the reverse. MDS, Breen state II. This cent was struck with the dies not in correct axial alignment (die faces not parallel). This caused significant weakness at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse. LIBERTY and the denominator are barely visible as a result. Breen mentions this feature is his description of state II. Pieces struck with the dies so far out of alignment can rightly be called mint errors, and this is an excellent example of that type of mistake.

1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse VG8. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. The only marks are some light rim bruises on both sides, the strongest of these over AT in STATES. MDS, Breen state IV. A single, strong die crack reaches from the first 0 in the denominator through UNI. The date is bold and the legends are clear. All 3 of the die-cutter errors are strong. A nice lower grade example of this very popular "Redbook" variety.

1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse AG3. Mostly glossy light olive and chocolate brown with reddish chocolate toning covering the protected areas. The surfaces are reasonably smooth but not perfectly so. No notable contact marks or verdigris. LDS with a strong die crack arcing through the fraction and UNI plus a weaker crack arcing from the numerator to the T in UNITED. The missing wreath stem and error on the U are obvious but the error denominator (000) is weak due to the late die state. The date is easily readable.

1801 S-221 R2 Corrected Fraction 100 over 000 VG10+. Sharpness near F15 but there are several old vertical scratches in the field behind the portrait. 1801 NC-4 R7 G4+. Sharpness VG7 but the planchet is covered with microscopic roughness and porosity, strongest on the reverse. No verdigris, but there are several old, light scratches on the portrait, mostly in the hair and ribbon, plus a couple more at ES in STATES. The most significant mark is an obvious and rather deep scratch from the bottom of the O in ONE to the E in CENT. Dark steel and olive. The obverse is slightly glossy while the reverse is closer to matte. The date is bold and the legends are complete. The diagnostic die defect that connects the bases of the B & E in LIBERTY is obvious. Tied for CC#4 among only 9 examples known. The top two examples also are far from perfect with grades of VF25 net VG8 and VF20 net VG7, the significant deductions assessed for serious surface defects.

1802 S-225 R3 VG10. Ten points sharper where the designs were properly struck up but there is significant weakness along the left side of the obverse and lower left part of the reverse. It appears the dies were not in proper axial alignment (die faces not parallel). Whatever the reason, the weak areas show numerous small contact marks, perhaps mixed with pre-striking planchet marks that didn't get pressed out during the strike. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. Some crud in protected areas. E-MDS, Breen state II, showing strong die clashmarks under the date and bust tip.
