Lot 768
1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA G5. Glossy chocolate and darker steel brown with slightly lighter brown toning in the center of the reverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. The only defects are fine hairline scratches covering much of the obverse and a small rim nick over the N in UNITED. The date and legends are easily readable, although the bottom of the date is worn away. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. Nice color and eye appeal for the grade as most at this level suffer from significant defects.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent G4. Sharpness several points better but there is a significant dent just right of the fraction that obliterates the second A in AMERICA. The area at the opposing Y in LIBERTY was affected as well and a slight bulge shows in that area. Otherwise the planchet is smooth with only minor contact marks and no trace of corrosion or verdigris. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. The date is clear and the legends are complete except where affected by the dent.

1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap VG7+. Slightly sharper but covered with microscopic roughness, strongest in the protected areas while the devices are nearly smooth. No verdigris or contact marks. Slightly glossy medium brown with chocolate toning in the protected areas. The contrast in toning accents the devices and give this piece the look of an even higher grade. The date is bold and the legends are clear. Late die state, Breen state II, with obvious swelling inside the wreath that weakens ENT in CENT. The eye appeal of this cent is quite nice in spite of the minor roughness.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

Lot 771
1794 S-20 R5 Head of 1793 with Straight Date. PCGS graded AU-50. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown toning covering the protected areas on both sides. There is a tiny spot of darker reddish olive brown toning on the nose before the eye plus larger but more subtle splashes of similar reddish chocolate brown toning at TED, STA, OF, and in the dentils at RI in AMERICA. The surfaces are smooth and very attractive, virtually void of contact marks. The only notable sign of contact is a tiny rim bruise left of the bottom of the cap. Late die state, Breen state II, with a faint wave in the field from the chin to the rim at right. This is an outstanding example of a rare and very popular die variety, and it is arguably the finest example known outside the American Numismatic Society (ANS) collection. Bill Noyes calls this piece VF30 (Noyes photo #22590) and has it tied for CC#2 honors with one other piece behind the ANS example. Bland says VF25 and tied for CC#4 in his census, but a comparison of photos clearly supports the Noyes arrangement. Our grade is VF30. This cent was called EF45 by PCGS in an earlier assessment, but upon further review they have justifiably raised their grade to the currently assigned AU50. Noyes plated this example in his 2006 book on the series and Samuel Hudson Chapman used this piece to illustrate the obverse die in his 1923 monograph "The United States Cents of the Year 1794." And this cent comes with a long, very impressive provenance that includes many of the "heavyweights" of 1794 cent collectors. PCGS population 1 with none finer for the variety.
Estimated Value $40,000-UP.

1794 S-34 R5+ VF30. Sharpness EF40 but lightly cleaned and retoned an attractive frosty light chocolate brown blended with a hint of reddish brown toning in the hair under the cap and at TAT in STATES. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth, especially in the field under the cap where there are traces of extremely fine porosity. The best identifying marks are a tiny planchet chip between the bottoms of the 7 & 9 in the date and a rim bruise at the M in AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state II. Sharply struck and attractive in spite of the minor distractions. Clearly sharper than the Husak-Boka VF30, which was considered the finest known outside the VF35 impounded in the American Numismatic Society collection. This piece is in a slightly earlier die state than any of the other nice ones in the Noyes census. An important, high condition census example of this rare variety, arguably the finest available outside the ANS Museum. Recently discovered unattributed in a small collection.

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap VG10. Flipover Triple Strike with 3 Dates. Sharpness VF20 but covered with microscopic porosity, strongest on the reverse. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive blending into dark chocolate. This cent was struck three times and (remarkably) all 3 of the dates remain visible. One strike (probably the first) was nearly centered on the planchet. Another strike (probably the second when the struck cent failed to eject completely) was about 30% off center. A third strike (probably the last) was centered on the planchet after it was flipped over. This third strike left the dominant impression on both sides, but strong evidence of the first two impressions remains. This includes three dates, one on the "obverse" and two on the "reverse." In addition to the "796" under the portrait on the dominant obverse, another "796" is visible at the D in UNITED and a third "96" is visible under AT in STATES. Much additional undertype is visible on both sides. This one is worth examining just for the enjoyment of studying such an egregious mint error.

1796 S-100 R5 Draped Bust. PCGS graded Good-4. The obverse is slightly sharper while the reverse is a bit weaker, the G4 grade an average of the two. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate with darker olive brown toning in the protected areas. The two-tone appearance helps accent the details, which is especially helpful with a low grade cent. There is some microscopic roughness under the mostly glossy patina, but overall the surfaces are decent for the grade. Extremely Rare M-LDS, Breen state III late, with a strong die crack through the tops of ATES OF and the area above the crack is heavily sunken into a retained cud. An impressive die state.
