Lot 2650
1902, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Anaheim, CA. PCGS Fine 15. Fr-650. . KL-1302. This is considerably the scarcer of Anaheim's two collectible banks (the third is unreported). Ten large examples are listed in the census, a deceptive figure because many are ensconced in long term holdings and have been off the market for decades. This pleasing example previously appeared in the Horwedel sale, where it sold for $1,265. Expect a minimum of a similar result tonight.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Only three Value Backs (all from this bank) and seven Second Charter notes of any design are known from Orange County. This piece from the Pannier Collection is the highest grade example listed in the census. Rare in all respects, and very likely to reach or exceed the top end of our estimate.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

1882, $10 National Bank Note. The First NB, Fullerton, CA. PCGS Very Fine 30. Fr-577. . KL-1212. This large size-only bank was chartered in 1900 and closed in 1924. The higher grade of the two known $10 Value Backs from here, this piece is one of the nicest of the dozen reported large size examples in the census. The last Second Charter note sold from here, a lower grade Date Back example, brought $6,000 more than six years ago. Expect spirited bidding that could far surpass our estimate.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.

1882, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Fullerton, CA. PCGS Apparent Fine 15. Fr-555. . KL-1278. This rare note is the only known 1882 series Date Back example of any denomination from any Orange County Bank, and is one of just seven reported Second Charter notes of any design type from the county. Despite receiving an "Apparent" grade from PCGS Currency for some trivial repairs near the center that affect nothing, it is a pleasing example overall and stands alone on rarity. When last sold as part of the Horwedel collection in 2004, it brought a hair over $6,000. Expect no less when this piece crosses the block today.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.

1902, $5 National Bank Note. First NT & SB, Fullerton, CA. PCGS Very Good 10. Fr-609. . KL-1166. Only four large size pieces are known to exist, including two from this collection. All save one (a serial number 1 note which we have never seen offered for sale) are well circulated, with this note no exception. This is, however, a solid example, its only flaw (and a minor one at that) being a bottom margin that is trimmed a bit tight. When last sold in 2008, this note, previously from the Kansas City collection, brought $5,175.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.

1902, $10 National Bank Note. First NT & SB, Fullerton, CA. PCGS Fine 12. Fr-635. . KL-1239. Only four large size notes are reported in the census on this bank, which was chartered in 1925 as the New First National Bank but did not issue until its name change in 1927. Only $490 in large was outstanding in 1935, and this is the only known $10. A pleasing circulated example with slightly faded but plainly visible stamped signatures.

1902, $5 National Bank Note. The First NB, Garden Grove. PCGS Fine 15. Fr-606. . KL-1163. Garden Grove was founded by Alonzo Cook in 1874. It remained a small rural crossroads until the arrival of the railroad in 1905. The First National Bank was chartered in 1918, and remained the only bank in town during the National Bank Note issuing period. This solid circulated example is a pleasing Fine-VF $5 with strong stamped signatures, and is one of just 10 large size notes reported in the census. This note is pedigreed to the Kansas City Collection, and when last sold, in January 2008, it realized nearly $1,500.

Lot 2664
1902, $10 National Bank Note. The First NB, La Habra, CA. PCGS Very Good 10. Fr-633. . KL-1237. Another great rarity from this Orange County collection, this is one of only two notes known from this bank, La Habra's only issuer. This offering marks only the fourth time in sixty-five years that collectors have had the opportunity to add a note from here to their holdings. This example first came to light in CAA's October, 1995 sale, where Lowell Horwedel obtained it at a then enormous price of $4,125. William Pannier was the winning bidder at the sale of Lowell's collection in 2004 at a whopping bid of $11,500. The only other example known is the Colver specimen, which sold in his 1999 sale for $5,225. With that piece now ensconced in a major long term holding, this will likely be the last opportunity for many years for any collector to own a note from this much sought after Orange County location. A nice solid Very Good-Fine, with clear signatures, a trophy note certain to inspire spirited bidding before it goes home to a new proud owner.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 10,000.

1902, $10 National Bank Note. The NB of Orange, CA. PCGS Very Choice New 64. Fr-619. . KL-1222. This is much the scarcer of Orange's two issuing banks, with this institution emitting large notes only until its demise in 1927. Although a fair number of notes are known, offerings have been few and far between. This is a remarkable high grade example, with outstanding pen signatures and bearing serial number 9.

It was chartered in 1911 and liquidated in 1926. This note is a lovely crisp example, with sharp pen signatures of John E. Scott as cashier and A.S. Bradford as bank president. It is pedigreed to the Colver collection and realized $2,500 in 1998; it last sold for more than $5,000 when it last appeared as part of Lowell Horwedel's collection in 2004.

1902, $5 National Bank Note. The Commercial NB, Santa Ana, CA. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25. Fr-610. . KL-1167. A late charter bank which issued large notes for a little over one year. With only $290 outstanding in 1935, one would expect this to be in the ultra-rare to unobtainable category, but to date eight large notes have been reported. While some minor defects are noted by PCGS Currency, including a small edge split, a repaired edge tear and some minor rust stains, this piece is certainly an acceptable example.

1902, $10 National Bank Note. The First NB, Santa Ana, CA. PCGS Very Good 10. Fr-614. . KL-1217. While this incredible rarity is from a common bank, it is an important offering as the only known Red Seal from any bank in Orange County. Its importance as such cannot be overstated, as Red Seals were printed on three Orange County banks but none but this piece have survived. It is moderately circulated but basically free of any problems, and grade is likely irrelevant on a rarity of this scale. While the Kelly reference suggests a value in the range of our estimate, we would not be at all surprised if spirited bidding resulted in a hammer price well into five figures.

1902, $20 National Bank Note. The Farmers & Merchants NB, Santa Ana, CA. PCGS Very Fine 20PPQ. Fr-643. . KL-1294. This is Santa Ana's scarcest bank, issuing for less than 14 years before closing in 1919. Only four notes are known from here, with our data showing that only three times in sixty years has any example from this bank been available to the collecting fraternity, once in the 1990 Krakover sale, and this note twice in the Colver collection sale of 1999 and the Horwedel sale of 2004. This attractive pen signed Date Back realized $2,420 in the Colver sale and more than $5,000 in the Horwedel sale. It is fully original and problem-free for the grade, and is likely to approach or exceed its realization from more than six years ago.

1929, $10 National Bank Note. The First NB, Olive, CA. PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ. Fr-1801-1. . KL-1243. This one-bank community is today one of the smallest inhabited unincorporated areas in California. Now completely surrounded by the city of Orange, Olive was settled in 1887 and most of the existing houses date pre-1930s. Not surprisingly, notes from here are seldom seen and public sales are few and far between. This high grade example is a real "peach," and is one of the two or three finest notes known from here. It is new to the census which now stands at nine small size examples known. A similar grade piece brought more than $6,000 in the Horwedel sale in 2004, and although we don't expect quite that realization today we wouldn't be entirely surprised if it approached or exceeded that mark.
