1884-S. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. Scarce date in Mint State. Lustrous fields ripple with original mint bloom. Against this are set nicely subdued, matte design elements with only minor bag contact. A unsuccessful strike was left by the rebound of the dies that coined this '84-S, but we point to the fact that this occurs only in the exact center on both sides, where the hair above the ear and breast detail are marginally lacking. Elsewhere, the devices were struck with such force and energy by the dies that their design elements show boldly (PCGS # 7156) .

The Year 1884 in history: This is the year Mark Twain, pseudonym for Samuel L. Clemens, published his "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

Governments aren't so blatant about it nowadays, but in November 1884, representatives from 14 governments, including Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Belgium, met in Berlin at the behest of Otto von Bismarck to formally carve up Africa (the Berlin Conference). In order to bring some order to the mad scramble for loot on the continent, the countries agreed that for a claim to be recognized internationally, the colonizing government must occupy the territory with ground forces. They also agreed to suppress slavery and to promote the tenets of Western civilization (e.g., slaying the natives). The meeting lasted until February of 1885. (The United States did not participate in the conference but would soon follow in the Imperialists' footsteps. The scramble for resources continues to this day.).

1885. NGC graded Proof 69 Cameo. Star. Only 930 struck. Perhaps one of the finest pure white Proofs ever graded. How is it possible for us to impress upon readers the beauty, the serene quality of this most fantastic Cameo Proof Morgan Dollar? Both sides are sharply detailed with even the highest points of the design razor-edged including the hair strands above Liberty's ear. Richly frosted, the devices ascend in stark white prominence above the glassy deep of the fields. A black-on-white Proof is how numismatists would describe this coin's appearance. We can find no spots, nor hairlines, and neither do we see any other post-striking faults or shortcomings whatsoever. No planchet flakes occur; and what appears at first blush to be a sinister dark area on the chin isn't on the coin's surface after all, the coin is pristine. Rest assured: everything is brilliant, from the snow-white appearance of the frost to the way it explodes outward like a solar flare and into your field of vision. Worthy of inclusion in the Top Registry quality Proof Morgan Dollar set or date set. Pop 1; none finer at NGC (PCGS # 7320) .

Several noteworthy events occurred in 1885, the year of this remarkable Proof Silver Dollar. On February 21, 1885, President Chester A. Arthur dedicated the Washington Monument; on June 17, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor. For soda drinkers, on December 1, 1885, the U.S. Patent Office acknowledged this date as the day Dr Pepper was served for the very first time (the exact date of Dr Pepper's invention remains unknown). And last but not least, in 1885, the first skyscraper (the Home Insurance Building) was built in Chicago, Illinois, USA (10 floors).

Lot 1662
1886-O. PCGS graded MS-64. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A nice white coin with a better than average strike. The bright and frosty coin offered here represents one of the most desirable MS64 certified 1886-O dollars. And it is to be expected with such an imposing condition rarity, the population figures are consistent with its avowed exclusivity in choice grade. The landmark offering of the present example may be one of the few appearances of this rare issue in 2011.

This date should be common but it is not. The mintage was over 10 million coins, which makes it hard to believe more don't exist in Mint State grades. After all, the 1881-S issue had comparable mintage, yet well over a million examples of that date are known in Mint State grades (due to the immense hoard found in the Continental Bank vaults in 1984). David Bowers speculates in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States (1993): "At or near the time of striking in the nineteenth century, probably a few million coins, say two to four million, were placed into circulation and saw commercial use. Probably, millions of other coins, perhaps as many as six to eight million pieces, went to the melting pot under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act." Recent grading statistics prove that in MS64 grade it is difficult to locate. In MS65 preservation the 1886-O happens to be the rarest New Orleans Mint Morgan dollar! The dramatic difference in the number of survivors between MS64 and MS65 is reflected in various auction results and price guides. We expect this fine example will bring near-record bidding from astute purchasers. Pop 213; 6 finer, 3 in 64+, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+ (PCGS # 7168) .

1886-S. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Well struck and white. Intense but still satiny frost, the coin not even slightly toned which allows for the silver radiance to persist almost undiminished. In former days, such luster was enough to determine a coin's status. But today, just as important is the strike. And here, too, there is no deviation in the sharp relief seen, not even in the centers of the coin. Pop 253; 33 finer, 1 in 65+, 28 in 66, 4 in 67 (PCGS # 7170) .
