Lot 1460
1877-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Frosty with stunning rainbow toning on the obverse and warm golden tones on the reverse. Sleek frostiness seesaws in and out of the devices under these lovely colors with an occasional hint of silver sparkling edging its way through. On the heels of such active luster and toning, we are satisfied to describe a coin faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies.

Although forgotten by numismatists now, 1877 was a special year. It had long been thought that the subsidiary coins which suddenly disappeared in 1861-62 during the Civil War were melted or sent to Europe and sold as bullion. As a matter of fact only a small proportion were disposed of in this way. The great majority went to countries where they had values as coins above their bullion values, some to Canada but most to Latin-America. Their dramatic reappearance in America beginning in 1877 fill the press reports of the time. Pop 25; 14 in 66; 1 in 66+; 1 in 67 (PCGS # 6357) .

1884. PCGS graded Proof 66. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. Only 875 Proofs struck. A resplendent example of this scarce date which boasts exceptional toning, the key to its star attraction. Note the multicolor hues which extend in from the rims well beyond the stars and date, into all areas and bathing Liberty and the eagle with its dizzying array of colors. Neither to be overlooked are the fields and devices, which retain the desired mint originality and freedom from handling which is seldom found on Proof Seated Halves of the 1880s. In every way, he present coin has a claim to being one of most attractively toned of this date. An outstanding and memorable example for the specialist, it will delight anyone knowledgeable in numismatics. Pop 8; 2 in 67, 1 in 68 (PCGS # 6445) .

Virtually perfect fields spread their mirror-like glitter in every direction. Our observation of the luster ends but we could write dozens more words and not exhaust ourselves. 1927-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Frosty and lightly toned. A virtually fully struck Gem with a light overlay of ice-white haze that nicely captures the silvery color. Close examination reveals some minor softness in the detail at the leg and hand. Destined for a fine Walking Liberty Half Dollar collection.

One of only five half dollar issues between 1922 and 1932, the 1927-S most likely saw extensive circulation throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s. The scarcity of Gem quality examples enhances the desirability.

With the introduction of the 1927 issue the mint redesigned the drapery lines at and below Liberty's right shoulder by putting them into stronger relief; there is also a strong incuse border around the flag and curl below Liberty's right arm, separating it from the lower level of the flag and giving it an appearance of being in higher relief. Pop 56; 6 finer in 66 (PCGS # 6587) .

1941-D. NGC graded MS-67. A well struck frosty white superb gem example.

There was a wide variety of music on the radio in 1941 -- if you liked country (often called "Hillbilly" music back then), Gene Autry had his own show, the Melody Ranch, and the Grand Ole Opry was on Saturday night. It was a year when the great band-leaders dominated the charts: Artie Shaw ("Frenesi"), Jimmy Dorsey ("I Hear a Rhapsody"), Benny Goodman ("There'll Be Some Changes Made"), and Gene Krupa ("It All Comes Back to Me Now"). There was always a hot-selling Glenn Miller record, such as "Song of the Volga Boatmen" or "Chattanooga Choo Choo"; and many listened faithfully to his radio show on the CBS network.
