The Dan Holmes Collection of Late Date Large Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 351
(1849) Blank Planchet, probably made for 1849 cents with beveled edges (N-5 & N-8) AU50. Glossy chocolate brown. Essentially new with frosty surfaces, but lightly scratched on one side with "CC/M/1857" in three lines. The edges of this planchet are clearly different than on any other blank planchets in either stage I (rims not upset) or stage II (rims upset ready for striking). Weight 166.5 grains. This planchet helps explain the oddly beveled edges seen on the two 1849 varieties mentioned (N-5 & N-8) and possibly a few of the Newcomb-4 variety such as the third one offered earlier. The beveled edges match perfectly when compared to struck cents of those varieties. I suspect this planchet was either supplied by a different vendor or was part of a trial to find better designs to help feed planchets into and out of the presses. This is the only blank with beveled edges seen or heard of by Grellman. Comes with an interesting very old envelope marked "Copper/U.S./Blank Large Cent/Phila Mint/1850" in excellent (and very old) penmanship. The 1850 date would help confirm the connection to the die varieties of 1849. A very significant piece. DWH #2251.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

M-LDS, die state f, with several areas of crumbling on the reverse, including small crumbles on the lower right of berry 5. CC#2 for this tough die variety, and only two are known in mint state. 1849 N-10 R3 MS60+. Lustrous bluish steel brown with traces of mint red in protected areas, mostly on the obverse. The fields are satiny and lustrous. Defects include a tiny speck of carbon in the field close over star 2, a short hairline scratch on the bust over the 8, and a light nick on the forehead. Excellent eye appeal. LDS, die state d, with the obverse heavily lapped to remove die rust, although some roughness remains in the field at stars 3-9. The lump on the coronet is larger and extends nearly to below the left point of star 6, the digits of the date are thin thanks to the heavy lapping, and several tiny rim cud breaks show on both sides, strongest at stars 12 & 13. Lapping to the reverse die added a die line at T in UNITED. A scarce die state that offers a distinctly different appearance than the earlier or rusted states of these dies. Very nice for the grade. Tied for CC#2 with only 4 known in any mint state grade. DWH #2126.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

There is a small vertical nick left of star 7, a tiny tick off the chin, and a small spot of darker olive toning on the right side of star 4. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with die polishing lines covering the reverse fields. The obverse fields also show fine die polishing lines, but those die lines are much lighter. Tied for CC#2 with one other piece and only 3 are known in mint state. DWH #2135.

1849 N-30 R6 AU55. Frosty light olive and golden brown with darker steel overtones, especially on the obverse. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective. Mint state sharpness with several carbon spots on both sides, the largest of these at the dentils over star 11 and under the tip of the wreath stem. There is a very light rim bruise right of star 9 and another over the I in AMERICA. EDS, die state a, without any crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. Several examples of this variety were called proof strikes by Breen (who incorrectly called them early strikes of N-1) and Loring, and NGC has even certified a few as proofs. In Grellman's opinion, all N-30 examples are business strikes and only the early strikes exhibit reflective fields. But the sharpness and eye appeal of the early strikes are outstanding. Tied for CC#4 of this rare die variety, and the finest is a prooflike gem that resides in the ANS collection. DWH #1867.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1850 N-11 R7+ (as a proof). PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. Light bluish steel brown with underlying faded red covering the fields and protected areas, nearly a third of the very faded red remaining. The fields are highly reflective with moderate to deep mirrors on both sides. Very sharply struck, all the fine details fully impressed. This cent is a gem except for a swipe of lighter toning across the lower curls to star 13, and traces of crud can be found in protected areas of this stain. The only other flaw worthy of mention is a tiny splash of dark crud at the dentil tip left of star 5. Fewer than a half dozen confirmed proof strikes are known, and this one is tied for second finest. Called Proof-63 by Bland and Loring and tied for CC#2. Our grade is Proof-63, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety in his book on proofs. A beautiful example of this extremely rare proof large cent, and it has been owned by a long line of prominent numismatists. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
