1846 N-21 R6. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. Glossy steel brown with traces of frosty light steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas. The fields are reflective with shallow to moderately deep mirrors, deepest on the obverse. Those fields are covered with very fine die polishing lines and display many of the very tiny struck-through lint marks characteristic of proof strikes. The rims are squared and the strike is sharp with full radials in all the stars except for #1. There is strong strike doubling on the reverse from die bounce. The notable defects are a small carbon spot below the IT in UNITED and another hidden between the leaf and berry left of the O in ONE. Very early die state (VEDS), die state a. The die cracks through the date and most stars are faint. Called Proof-60+ by Denis Loring and Proof-61 by Del Bland. Walter Breen also called this piece a proof, one of only two listed in his proof census for N-21. Our grade is MS62+ Prooflike, CC#2 in the Grellman census. In Grellman’s opinion there are no true proof strikes of this variety, although the piece offered here comes the closest in his opinion. Obviously this is another one that is subject to debate. But we can all agree this is a sharp, especially attractive example of a very rare variety. And it comes with a nice provenance. The Dan Holmes provenance is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only Proof example of the variety graded by PCGS. DWH #1861 (PCGS # 502707) .

1846 N-22 R7 Small Date Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. Mint red fading to bluish steel brown with half the original red color remaining, mostly on the obverse. The obverse is a remarkable gem, virtually flawless. The reverse is not quite as nice because of a small swipe of darker brown toning at ICA, and there are minute specks of crud in protected areas of the stain. The only other flaw is microscopic lamination down from the right base of E in CENT, as struck. The fields are nicely reflective with deep mirrors that offer outstanding eye appeal. A great cent and a solid gem except for the small stain. Finest by a small margin of only 6 known, and one of those is housed in the Smithsonian. Called Proof-64 and finest known by a small margin in the Del Bland and Denis Loring census lists. Our grade is Proof-63+, CC#1 by a small margin in the Grellman census. 1846 Contemporary Counterfeit F12. Glossy light steel brown and olive with hints of reddish brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and free of any notable marks. This is a struck counterfeit made from transfer dies. The legends and devices are present but their margins are not well defined (as always), which is a function of the dies used, not post-striking wear or damage. Struck on a thin planchet that is of a slightly smaller diameter than normal for mature head cents (26.0 millimeters versus the usual 27.5 weighing only 126.6 grains versus the usual 165 or so). The reverse is rotated 130 degrees CCW. Only 10 examples are known with certainty, but a couple more may exist. While the more-famous 1848 "Small Date" counterfeit cents were struck using handmade dies, these 1846 cents appear to have been struck using dies made from a genuine 1846 cent. The transfer process was not especially effective leaving the details rather mushy. Attempts to identify the die variety of 1846 cent used for the transfer have been unsuccessful due to the lack of fine detail. There is also the possibility that these were struck using heavily burnished scrap dies employed in the Mickley tradition (1804 and 1823 "restrike" cents). Regardless, they are quite rare and are becoming very popular. See page 72 of the 2001 edition of the Grellman late date cent book for a brief discussion of these counterfeits. DWH #3423.

1847 N-7 R2+ F15. Sharpness near VF20 with some light contact marks on the obverse. None of these marks is distracting, but there are too many for the higher grade. A tiny pinprick on the cheek right of the nostril is a good identifying mark. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown. LDS, die state d or e. There is a clear rim cud break at stars 11-12 and another slightly less obvious one from under the 18 in the date to star 1. There may have been another rim cud at stars 2-3, but the rim is thin and worn in that area so the presence of that rim cud is uncertain. CC#2 of only 3 known in die state d, but a cud at stars 2-3 would make this the much more common die state e, which is quite possible. Reiver thought it was state d.
