There are a few very tiny specks of carbon in the field under the chin, a speck of carbon on the right top of the second S in STATES, and a dull nick on the rim under the ribbon loop. MDS, die state b. The die line across the bottom of the N in ONE and the lump over N in CENT are now gone. The coronet over LIB and the opposing area on the lower part of the wreath are softly struck, as usual. Much of the reverse legend is doubled from die bounce. Tied for CC#9 with many others. DWH #2341.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

The fine die line through star 6 is clear and the 4 embedded in the curls over the left top of the 5 is bold. A very attractive cent, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. DWH #2229.

1854 N-4 R2 Repunched 4 MS62+. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with 20% of the original mint color remaining on the obverse, 30% on the reverse. No spots or stains, just a few trivial marks from choice. These include a thin, very light nick in the center of the neck plus a tiny planchet void in the field under the left edge of star 5 and a few more on the rim under the 4 in the date, as struck. E-MDS, die state a. The fine repunching on the 4 and the delicate die clashmarks are clear. CC#2 behind a slightly finer example in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS64BN (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). DWH #3013.

1854 N-5 R4- Repunched 18 MS64. Bright original mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints, about 75% of the original color remaining. There is a small spot of very fine carbon close under star 9 and a faint nick on the nose even with the eye. The cheek and upper half of the neck are covered with a shallow low spot and the coronet tip over LIB is softly struck. MDS, die state b late. The repunching at the 18 is weak but still visible and the double die clashmarks at the left top of the O in ONE are barely visible. CC#1 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS65RB (NGC label included). DWH #2313.

1854 N-6 R1 MS60+. Bright original mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints, 75% of the original color remaining, mostly on the obverse. Would rate a much higher grade if not for several carbon spots scattered on the upper half of the obverse, including one that covers star 5. Looks like your classic "sneeze victim." Too bad, since this example has far more mint color than any other example known of the variety. As it is, it’s still tied for CC#3 with several other examples. MDS, die state b. There is a tiny lump close under the tip of the nose and the die lines from the dentils at star 2 are dull. DWH #3191.

There is a tiny, slightly curved struck-through mark on the chin (caused by a tiny piece of lint or wire on the die) and traces of an old fingerprint in the field close to the main curl. M-LDS, die state b. The repunching on the 1 and 4 is gone and a flowline extends from the right base of the 4 down to the right top of a dentil. The fields are rough from flowlines. Tied for CC#5. 1854 N-9 R2 Dartboard Obverse MS62+. Lustrous dark bluish steel brown and light olive with faded mint red remaining in protected areas, especially on the obverse. No spots, stains, or contact marks. A tiny planchet void on the rim just below star 2 is the best identifying mark. Would rate a choice grade except for a shallow low spot that covers the cheek with another one over NT in CENT. These low spots are caused by debris on the dies and are nearly always present to some degree on this die variety. Otherwise this cent is sharply struck. E-MDS, die state b. The dies are strongly clashed but the fields are smooth and the stray numerals punched into the portrait and right side of the ear (the "Dartboard" error) are clear. CC#3 for this popular variety in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS64BN (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). DWH #3015.

1854 N-12 R6 (as a proof) Repunching Below 1. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. Steel brown with delicate hints of bluish steel overtones and faded mint red covering the fields, about 50% remaining on the obverse and 10% on the reverse. The fields are nicely reflective and the mirrors are moderate to deep in spite of some extremely faint hairlines. The only significant defect is a small spot of darker toning on the upper edge of the bust, and this spot is very lightly abraded. The additional identifying marks are a tiny curved struck-through line at the right tip of star 1, a small carbon spot on the rim at ED, and a small nick-like rim chip on the edge at the second T in STATES (as struck). Called Proof-64 and finest known in the Denis Loring census. Our grade is Proof-64, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census of proof strikes. A very attractive large cent and an unquestioned proof strike. And it comes with an impressive list of prior owners. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
