Lot 3665
1795 Two Leaves B-1, BB-21 Rarity 2. NGC graded EF-45. Attractive "antique silver" toning spreads smoothly across the matte-like surfaces of this attractively Flowing Hair coin. A blend of shades can be seen on both sides: deepest silver-gray to russet at the periphery, lighter shades within and on the devices. The strike is strong throughout with the main designs well detailed in the wings and Liberty's hair. Rims are above-average as well.

The Flowing Hair type dollar had a short production run: only in 1794 and 1795. No doubt a greater mintage would have occurred in the former year, had a coining press of sufficient capacity been available to use; the press used for striking half dollars was all that was on hand, and the coins did not strike up satisfactorily. Accordingly, mintage in quantity was postponed until proper equipment could be obtained. The Flowing Hair dollars encompass many interesting die varieties.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

1799. Irregular Date, 15 Stars B-4, BB-153 Rarity 4. NGC graded VF-35. An attractive example of the Type and variety, with some intriguing die breaks running through LIBERTY and the date, among others. The light gray surfaces are offset with some darker patina around stars and legends that looks as though it would like nothing better than retreat back into an old 19th century style mahogany coin cabinet where it no doubt rested all these years. Well struck for the variety and easily matching or surpassing others in this grade, with the usual unevenness on some of the hair waves as well as at the center of the shield.
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500.

1873 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63. CAC Approved. Untoned. Only 865 struck. A white, fresh example, as crisp and shimmering as when it was first issued barring some slight mellowing in the reflective surface. Normal detail on all devices is typical for this first-year issue; however, with present specimen we see a wonderful exception in most regions of crisp strike with only a couple of the stars showing any rounding. An attractive PR63 coin. Pop 46; 36 finer (PCGS # 7053) .

1880 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. A nice white coin. Only 1,987 struck for this Proof only year. Both sides display the typical "look" for this desirable Proof-only delivery: thickly frosted surfaces, rolling mirror effects, and boldly struck devices, although some stars on the left are flatly struck. What gladdens us most is to see a deep rather than a dullish, smooth mirror field was left by the pressure of the highly polished dies that struck this attractive specimen. Pop 46; 29 finer (PCGS # 87060) .

Lot 3702
1885-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. A velvety smooth and lustrous Superb Gem with an even flow of silvery radiance on both sides. The contact from the dies is virtually complete, although perhaps a hint of weakness is seen at the lower curls where they overlap the high point of Liberty's ear. Regarding this issue, at first glance, the 228,000-mintage 1885-CC looks like a fairly typical Carson City dollar date. The mintage was on the low side, however similar to other CC dates, the 1885-CC was part of the great Government Services Administration sales program in the 1970s. Included were 148,285 examples of the 1885-CC, or a little over 65% of the original mintage. The fact that so many examples of the 1885-CC were sold has perhaps made us overlook the fact that this date was considered very elusive before the sales. Pop 64; 8 finer (PCGS # 7160) .
