Lot 3590
1884 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded MS-66. Well struck with a hint of light gold tone. A high degree of luster distinguishes the satiny nickel gray surfaces from others of the date which are less pulsating even though in technically similar grade. Collectors familiar with the Liberty Nickel series will recognize this difference at once.

Business strike Liberty nickels appear to be one of the more undervalued areas in the coin market today. They are very scarce in an absolute sense, especially in comparison to their Proof cousins, and are also very challenging to locate in better-than-Gem grades. This is a fresh MS66 whose only imperfections are slight softness of strike as seen on one star and some minor weakness in the left ear of corn above the denomination on the reverse. Pop 15; 2 finer, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

1887 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded MS-66. A frosty untoned gem. Those who pursue the task find it more than difficult to acquire an 1887 business strike that is both brilliant and refreshingly clean. Further, we report shimmering luster in the fields and sleek, smooth devices. The fields are impeccable. Pop 17; 1 finer in 66+.
Estimated Value $2,300 - 2,400.

1900 Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC Approved. Only 2,262 struck. Light gold toning. Quite attractive. The superbly original, lustrous surfaces are readily appreciable at all angles. This is an important issue among Gem quality type buyers. No one can honestly deny the vibrancy of the surfaces, neither could the grading service when it assigned it a '67 grade. This, too, shows in the fully struck devices exhibiting fine detail to all the high points. A razor-sharp Liberty Nickel.Pop 14; 1 finer in 68 (PCGS # 3898) .
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200.

1909 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 67. Star PQ. CAC Approved. Only 4,763 struck. A wonderful untoned gem. What an extraordinary Superb Gem this is in all respects, the luster bold and unyielding, while white-frosted highlights blossom on both sides, Liberty showing impressive contrast against a reflective field. The strike is bold, indeed, as bold as ever seen on virtually any date in the series. Pop 8; 7 finer, 6 in 68, 1 in 68 Star .

1913 Buffalo Nickel. Type 1. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely golden toning has a delicate sheen from the undersurface; minor weakness on LIBERTY as made. The positioning of the word against the rim turned out to be a mistake which the mint rectified in 1916 by redesigning the master hub.

Lot 3597
1918-S Buffalo Nickel. NGC graded MS-65. Nicely toned and well struck. One might almost mistake this for a 1938-dated Buffalo Nickel given the remarkable detail and accomplished luster. That is why we are thrilled to describe it as a gem of the finest order for those who enjoy seeing explosive cartwheel luster adorning the surface. Piercingly sharp for the '18-S date, easily finer in sharpness than many in supposedly higher numerical grade. There is one small mark in the hair a few millimeters above the braid. There is another on the lower hip of the bison. LIBERTY is complete and crisply defined, as is the date and all areas on the reverse. The toning blends nickel-gray radiance caused by the outward metal flow from the dies along with warm golden accents which it acquired in the passage of time since it was made. Some of the word PLURIBUS is visible intaglio at the Indian's chin due clashing of the dies.

Numismatists believe that most of the mintage of 4.8 million coins circulated and continued doing so for years and years. Further explaining this year's condition rarity is the laughable striking detail on many survivors. Some features, such as the first two digits in the date, are often very weakly defined. However, the opposite is true here, the coin shows outstanding detail. Pop 14; 1 finer in 66.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.
