Lot 3200
1908-D $20 St. Gaudens. With motto. PCGS graded MS-65. Light golden toning. This marvelous D-mint Double Eagle, due to its supreme beauty and Gem 65 grade, will stretch out to find bidders far into the corners of the nation. The sparkling gold luster flares into heavy frostiness in all areas. That covers the luster. It appears to us that all minute detail is fully evident on this bold coin as well, with sharp devices including even the smallest element of the design. Pop 310; 28 finer (PCGS # 9148) .

Historic note: Omitting the customary motto IN GOD WE TRUST was not a trivial matter for President Theodore Roosevelt. When the first Double Eagles were released under his diktat in early November 1907, the omission was noticed immediately. Within a few days, angry letters, telegrams, and petitions peppered the President, Congress, Treasury and the Mint Bureau. Legislation requiring the motto be returned to the coins easily passed Congress (frightened for their jobs and facing an election that November?) and was signed on May 17, 1908. Social power having trumped a high government official once again, after June 17, all the new design gold coins carried the required inscription.

1914-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice golden toning. A consignment of heavenly 1914-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles arrived at our offices seemingly out of the blue, and were we surprised when we spread them out on the conference room table to examine them. For they were (and are), without mincing words, fresh, original, and almost perfectly matched for color and surface originality. Here, we tell ourselves, is the ultimate run of Gem specimens for the connoisseur of this popular gold series. Unless we misjudge out bidders, each and every one of these will find an appreciative new home. Be guided by the understanding that when these sell, there might not be another multiple coin run such as this offered for sale.

As for the sparkling individual in this Lot, Virtually glowing in the fields as though nuclear charged with energy. 1914 is a propitious date to have a nice run of double eagles like this beautiful Gem BU MS65. For it was a year that shook the foundations of civilized life from Europe to Britain and from America to the South Seas continent of Australia. On July 31, 1914, as war declarations spread throughout Europe presaging the First World War, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, William McAdoo shut the New York Stock Exchange for an unprecedented four months to hamper British sales of American securities. Why did he do this? The plan was to keep the British from draining American gold with the dollar proceeds from sales of U.S. stocks and bonds. (McAdoo desired to protect America's gold coin & bullion supply at a time when the 12 Federal Reserve Banks had yet to be fully supplied with the metal before their anticipated opening later that year.) Read further in subsequent listings for how this amazing story panned out, and how America barely escaped economic catastrophe only by the wise actions of William McAdoo, a man sadly forgotten by all but a few die-hard bushy-browed historians wearing tweed coats and bowties.

1914-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice frosty coin. The brilliant luster is satiny and consistent. A well struck and lustrous Gem that has carefully preserved surfaces. What seems obvious is that the clear-cut devices point to it having been giving a full, clear blow by the dies. Weakness occurs at a few central locations on some of this issue, but not on this handsome coin nor the others in this illustrious group in the surrounding Lots. Pop 1,835; 102 finer (PCGS # 9166) .

On August 3, 1914, having closed the stock exchange, Secretary McAdoo then flooded the country with paper money to prevent a repetition of the bank runs on the nation's gold that had embarrassed America only a few years earlier, during the Panic of 1907. Banks had been forced to suspend the convertibility of their deposits into currency and specie when they could not meet depositor demands for cash during October 1907. Banks avoided suspending their obligations in 1914 by offering depositors the emergency currency (National Bank Notes identical to those of the Series of 1902 Second Charter notes already in use) dispensed under McAdoo's orders.

A federal enactment passed in 1908 after the Panic of 1907 to guard against a replay of the panic, anticipated the importance of speed in containing a crisis. It had stipulated that $500 million in emergency currency that had been authorized be printed immediately after the passage of the act. Each national bank's allotment of notes, embossed with the bank's name and decorative logo, had been prepared for distribution by the end of 1908. The entire supply had been stored in an underground vault especially constructed for this purpose in Washington, D.C.

During The Great War of 1914-18, America was the only country that honored the gold standard by standing ready, willing, and most importantly able, to redeem any and all demands for gold payment brought to the window of the Treasury Department and the banks. The rest of the Warring nations were forced to come hat in hand to Wall Street and the U.S. Treasury for loans and ready payment to supply themselves with war materiel. It was only after 1916 that the U.S. Mints ceased making gold coins until stability returned in 1920. Even then, the supply was adequate to meet all demands for payment in specie "on demand" as required by the gold standard. Double eagles such as this were key to backing the currency and bank accounts of Americans, businesses and government entities throughout the troubled war years.
