1819 N-9 R1 EF40. Ten points sharper and the eye appeal is outstanding, but a glass reveals that the rims were very lightly smoothed, possibly to eliminate a couple tiny rim nicks. The surfaces inside those rims are beautiful. Just a light touch of rub on the highest points from mint state sharpness. Lustrous medium brown with a half dozen small splashes of reddish chocolate toning on the obverse. LDS. A Randall Hoard variety.

1820 N-8 R3 Small Date PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light steel brown and chocolate. Choice except for a few small splashes of reddish brown toning, mostly on the reverse. There are two of these spots on the obverse: one between stars 7 & 8 and another between stars 11 & 12. The reverse has a few more slightly larger splashes of this reddish brown toning, and the largest of these is at ICA. There are microscopic specks of greenish verdigris in that C. The only sign of contact is a very light mark above the 2 in the date. Excellent eye appeal in spite of the small splashes. MDS. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#3. Pop 9; 4 finer at PCGS in BN.

The surfaces are covered with unbroken satiny mint frost. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a couple very tiny nicks left of star 13, a shallow planchet flake right of the D in UNITED, and a barely visible spot of dark toning inside the C in CENT. M-LDS with fine die rust covering the portrait and most of the reverse (the usual Randall Hoard die state). Our grade is MS62+, close to MS63. The attribution is noted on the ICG label.

Glossy olive and chocolate brown with hints of reddish chocolate on both sides. LDS with all the die cracks and rust lumps, including the final die crack down between the T & E in STATES. Struck outside the US Mint using scrap dies circa 1879.

Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy light olive and chocolate blending to darker olive brown in protected areas on the reverse. MDS with minor rim crumbling at stars 2-4. The overdate is clear. Not perfect, but still near the lower end of the expanded condition census for this tough variety.

Great eye appeal for the grade. The best identifying mark is some darker toning inside the bottom of the first S in STATES. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. M-LDS. The fine die crack down through star 7 and the other from the bust tip to the peak of the 1 and on to the dentils below are both present, and the reverse is cracked from the dentils under the wreath up to the bottom of the E in CENT. Struck slightly off center to K-7. Our grade is consistent with the slab grade. Pop 10; 24 finer at PCGS in BN.

The only marks are some extremely faint hairlines across the obverse, and none of these is visible without a strong glass. The surfaces are lustrous and suggest a higher grade, but the strike is typically soft along the top of the head and at the opposing area at the bottom of the wreath. Excellent eye appeal for the grade. M-LDS. Tied for CC#11.

The surfaces are satiny and attractive, but they are covered with very fine hairlines that do not break the toning, which may be original. The only other defect is a planchet chip on the rim over ST in STATES. Sharply struck MDS. Traces of a double profile show on the forehead, nose, lips, and chin thanks to die bounce.
