Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 858
1799 S-189 R2 VG10. Sharpness VF25 or so where the details were struck properly, but the dies were not axially aligned (the die faces were not parallel) causing the date, bust tip, and opposing legend at TES OF to be faint or missing altogether. Breen discusses this phenomenon on pages 543 and 544 of his large cent encyclopedia where he explains how this misalignment during his die state IV caused the die crack of his die state V. The surfaces of this cent are covered with uniform very fine roughness under a rather glossy dark olive and steel patina. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few faint hairline scratches in the area where the date should have been. Breen state IV. The lump under E in ONE is strong. Called VF20 net VG8 in the Noyes census, his photo #25397.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1800/798 S-191 R3 Overdate 800 over 798 Style I Hair F12. Slightly sharper but there are a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade, including a few hairline scratches in the hair. The date and legends are clear and the overdate is obvious.

1800/179 S-194 R3 Overdate 180 over 179 with Style II Hair PCGS graded VF25 with CAC. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with underlying frost in protected areas. The only defects are a faint swipe of microscopic roughness from under LIB to the ends of the hair ribbon and a pinprick under the D in UNITED. Otherwise this cent is flawless, although the gloss is subdued by a thin layer of oxidation. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state III. A fine die crack arcs through the fraction bar but there are no rim cuds on the reverse. Our grade is VF20. The overdate feature is noted on the PCGS label.

Lot 865
1800 S-197 R1 VF30. The so-called "Q Variety" for its distinctive die crack through the first 0 in the date. Very slightly sharper but there are a few small contact marks, including a vertical nick in the field under the hair ribbon and a dull nick on the rim under the second 0 in the date. In addition, there is a short piece of brassy wire (most likely from a wire brush used to clean the dies at the mint) that is struck into the field before the eye. Struck-through voids are relatively common on early coppers where pieces of thread or wire get struck on a die and leave tiny impressions on the struck coins. However, having the piece of thread or wire (as in this case) actually remaining in the coin are extremely rare. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with lots of frosty luster showing in protected areas on the reverse. LDS, Breen state IV. The "Q" break through the first 0 in the date is strong and the die failures at LI are obvious. A beautiful example displaying an extremely rare type of mint error.

1800 S-211 R3 F15. Sharpness near VF35 but there is a patch of shallow roughness at TY. The roughness was not significant at all, but someone crudely scratched away the verdigris and the scratches are significant. The rest of the planchet is smooth and attractive. A small nick on the throat is the only contact mark. Glossy chocolate and olive brown. 1800 S-212 R3 F15. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy chocolate brown with lighter frosty steel brown in protected areas. The planchet is smooth and void of contact marks, but there are some obvious (and certainly eye-catching) planchet laminations on the obverse. These mint-made laminations have darker olive toning in the narrow voids, and this makes them stick out relative to the choice chocolate toning that covers everything else. E-MDS, Breen state II. An attractive example of this type of mint error.
