1797 S-120b R2 Reverse of 1796 with Gripped Edge F12. Slightly sharper but there are traces of extremely fine roughness on the reverse, strongest at the fraction. The only signs of contact are a few old pinscratches at ONE, but these blend perfectly into the natural toning. No verdigris. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. The date and legends are clear and the "Gripped Edge" feature is strong.

1797 S-122 R5+ VG8+. Sharpness VF20 but dark with fine roughness under a mostly glossy dark chocolate brown and olive patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of chocolate. No verdigris. The only marks are a light rim bruise over the R in LIBERTY and a thin nick or planchet chip left of the eye. The date and legends are complete and clear. EDS, Breen state I, without any die cracks on the reverse. Called VF20 net VG8 and tied for CC#7 overall in the Bland census, but finest known of the early die state. Noyes says F15 net VG8 and CC#8 overall, his photo #23026. Comes with an impressive provenance.

1797 S-129 R5 VG8+. Sharpness F12 or slightly better but covered with very fine porosity. No verdigris and only a few insignificant marks. The best identifying marks are two small nicks at the bottom of the E in ONE and a dull nick on the rim over the O in OF. Slightly glossy dark chocolate brown and olive with lighter chocolate and steel brown toning on the devices. E-MDS, Breen state II early. The date and legends are clear and the M over E error is easily visible. Graded F12 net VG8 and tied for CC#10 in the Breen/Bland condition census for this rare variety. Noyes says F12 net G6, his photo #43693.

1797 S-131 R2 Stemless Wreath F15. Sharpness near VF30 but there is a patch of shallow reddish corrosion covering much of the reverse above ONE. The rest of the planchet is reasonably smooth and the only significant mark is a light rim bruise just left of the date. Rather glossy dark olive and steel with lighter chocolate and steel toning on the devices. LDS with a large raised retained cud break covering the right edge of the field before the neck and bust. The date and legends are strong and the Stemless Wreath feature is clear.

1797 S-136 R3 AU50. The obverse is a beautiful lustrous chocolate with traces of frosty lighter steel brown in protected areas around the portrait, and this side offers mint state eye appeal. The reverse is a glossy chocolate brown blending to reddish chocolate in an uneven pattern. Microscopic traces of verdigris can be found in a few of the reddish chocolate areas, clearest at STA in STATES. LDS, Breen state V, with slightly reflective fields from a fresh die polishing. Called AU50 and CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 sharpness net VF30 and tied for CC#11, his photo #23336. The obverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Comes with a partially beaded edge on the planchet. This edge beading is noted by Breen who mentions that he had seen only 2 examples with this feature. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance.

1797 S-138 R1 NGC graded XF40. Glossy dark olive and steel with underlying frosty luster covering the protected areas. Subtle hints of reddish olive toning can be found in a few places on both sides. The surfaces are smooth except for traces of microscopic roughness at OF-A. A small pit or planchet void in the field under the hair ribbon and a light nick in the field close above the bust tip are the only notable marks. MDS, Breen state III. Swelling at ES-OF-AM is obvious and a dull die crack reaches down from the base of the Y in LIBERTY into the field before the portrait. Our grade is VF30. Pop 6.

LDS, Breen state IX, with significant die failure at the bust tip that weakens the 97 plus die cracks in the obverse fields. Noyes graded VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#13, his photo #36437.

All these marks blend perfectly into the medium brown and chocolate toning. The only notable mark is a spot of darker olive toning at the upper junction of the M & E in AMERICA. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, showing clear die clashmarks on the reverse and swelling at AMER. Too bad about the faint marks because this piece would have been very high in the condition census. Our grade is net VF30. The PCGS label mentions the "1st Hair Style" feature. Pop 4; 19 finer at PCGS in BN.

A die crack arcs through the field behind the portrait. Our grade is EF45+, close to AU50. Near the top of the condition census for this die variety, only one example confirmed better. The only notable mark is a dull horizontal scratch in the field left of the lower curls. Rare terminal die state, Breen state VI, with a cud break at TY extending to the right plus a strong cud that joins ICA to the rim above. Far superior to the Breen plate coin for the die state. Our grade is F15+, close to VF20.

The notable marks are a pinprick in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY and another at the tip of the ribbon left of the fraction. Frosty chocolate brown with steel toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster shows in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II. Very nice for the grade.
