Lincoln Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1356
1909-S Lincoln 1¢. NGC graded MS-67 Red. Lincoln. Well struck and spectacular. Housed in an Old Holder. We can honestly say that this is one of the nicest looking '09-S Lincoln Cents that has passed through a Goldberg auction. The color is exquisite, full-red luster. Both sides possess a superb frosty texture that is undisturbed by even a single blemish of note. Sharply struck, as befits the issue, and worthy of a premium quality bid. Pop 3; none finer at NGC.

This first-year in the Lincoln Cent series was produced both with and without the designer's initials V.D.B. on the lower reverse. This is the more frequently seen variant, though exceedingly rare in MS67 grade.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

Lot 1357
1909 Lincoln Cent. VDB. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown PQ. Lovely shades of red color. Only 1,194 Proofs issued. Matte Proofs were struck in 1909-16 including the first year V.D.B. issue. The types of coin designs in this period (Lincoln Cent, Buffalo Nickel, Mercury Dime, etc.) did not lend themselves to the making of bright-finish or brilliant Proof specimens. It seems that the face of the die touches almost every part of the planchet on the Victor D. Brenner Cents, dulling the surface of even a polished blank. Proof coins of the series therefore were issued with a matte or sandblast finish in the beginning. It wasn't until the 1930s that the mint developed a technique (still tricky) of creating polished mirror Proofs. A rare opportunity to acquire a fresh red Gem of the key 1909 V.D.B. Matte Proof!

The first Proof Lincoln Cents delivered by the Philadelphia Mint in 1909 were of the now-popular V.D.B. variety. The Mint's decision to withdraw Victor D. Brenner's initials from the lower reverse border resulted in a premature stoppage in production of the 1909 V.D.B. Any quality magnifying glass permits easy recognition of the matte textured finish. The sharply struck up features confirm this coin's Proof status. Broad, squared-off inner borders offer a frame around the plethora of original color that remains, the otherwise reddish-orange surfaces revealing wonderful iridescence along with a golden-brown sheen. A specimen that would readily identify its new owner as one of the more serious specialists in Lincoln Cents. Pop 25; 7 finer (PCGS # 3301) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.

Lot 1358
1909-S Lincoln Cent. VDB. NGC graded MS-66 RB. Old holder. Well struck with lots of mint red visible. A popular key date. Very well defined, right down to the ends of Lincoln's bow tie, with frosty orange-red surfaces that are colorfully overlaid with a dash of pale brown iridescence. The strike is strong, as mentioned, with clear definition to the high points including hair curls and full strength in the wheat ears. Collectors of high quality Wheat Ears-reverse Lincoln Cents would be wise to take full advantage of the fleeting bidding opportunity that this '09-S V.D.B. lot represents. Pop 43; 2 finer in 66 Star (PCGS # 2428) .

On the original models for this coin, Victor David Brenner had spelled out his name. Mint officials rejected this, so Brenner placed just his initials, VDB on the lower reverse. The White House quickly approved this, and forced the Mint to start production immediately. The boldness of the initials worried officials, and soon the press was against the signature. To attempt a compromise, the initial "B" was suggested for Lincoln's shoulder, but Mint Engraver Barber (who normally used his initial "B" to sign coins), rejected this. Soon Brenner's initials were dropped altogether, until Barber's death in late 1917. Starting in 1918, a small VDB was restored on the lower part of Lincoln's shoulder, where they remain to this day.

Once the public realized that coins with the VDB would be replaced due to their controversial nature, many were hoarded. P-mint coins are around in droves, though not the lower mintage (484,000 struck) S-mint. Hence, these have always been popular with collectors, and they have always found feverish demand.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

1909-S Lincoln Cent. VDB. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Some mint red is still present. Lovely golden reds expand well out into the open spaces on both sides. Always in great demand, this V.D.B. rarity is a legend in the coin collecting community. The designer's full name is Victor David Brenner (1871-1924). Pop 219; 100 finer.

1910 Lincoln Cent. ANACS graded Matte Proof 64 RB. Some faint iridescence adds to its appeal. Only 4,118 made. Lightly toned, yet basically near complete red in appearance. Devices were struck with the primary energy required to impart the Proof design to the outer areas as well as enough vigor by the dies to impart clear-cut centers on Lincoln's hair and beard, his tie and coat lapels, among other things. This is a well-known trait of the very scarce Matte Proof Lincoln Cents and is why collectors so appreciate them.

1911-D Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Boldly struck with lovely mint red color. The difficulty in acquiring a fresh brilliant red coin such as this shouldn't be taken lightly. Months might pass before another one surfaces since these tend to be in collections. So ends the discussion of the luster. Now on to the detail. This piece is not just close to, but completely and sharply struck, with terrific detail at the portrait, wheat ears, and all legends. Pop 126; 19 finer (PCGS # 2446) .

1912-D Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. A nice strike with full mint red color. Bright coppery with lighter high points. A satiny gem that displays an endless amount of luster and physical strength. The strike is bold -- not bad for a date that is typically found "mushy". A diminished impression is again the usual outlook for a D-mint offering of this year, Mint State or otherwise, but in contrast, this lovely Gem was left very boldly detailed after the recoil of the sharp dies; a fortunate occurrence.
