Lot 3771
1882 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-64. Beautiful prooflike surfaces. Only 1,500 struck for circulation. The 1882 has one of the lowest mintages of the series. It is a genuinely rare coin that apparently did circulate to some degree as most survivors are EF or AU, while Mint State pieces are quite elusive. In superior condition like Mint State 64, the 1882 is of the utmost importance, only a few other pieces having been so graded. The surfaces of this piece have the full, frosted mint luster that is seen on high grade $3s, and on this coin there is also a bit of semi-Prooflike quality noted. Fully struck in all areas, the surfaces are minimally abraded with no marks large enough to use for pedigree purposes. Pop 23; 10 finer, 5 in 65, 3 in 66, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 8004) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.

Lot 3772
1886 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-63. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Lovely rich golden toning. Prooflike surfaces. Both obverse and reverse reveal deep Prooflike fields with lovely frosted luster on the main device. Quality well above par a typical low-mintage $3 of this era in this grade. The striking is first-rate, significantly above average, with all the fine detail visible on the hair and feather plumes which are visually the center of focus on this side of the coin. Color is outstanding, a warm golden glow.

Mint records say that 1,000 circulation strikes were minted, but there must be more to this since even allowing for grade stretching in pre-third party grading days we estimate as few as 50 Mint State pieces exist today. Among these the present is very special in terms of its glowing color and surfaces. Worn pieces exist in larger numbers. In any other denomination an 1886 with this low mintage would be viewed as a great rarity. Pop 6; 6 finer, 5 in 64, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 8008) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.
