Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2192
Phoenicia, Tyre, AD 33/4. AR Shekel (14.20 g) dated year 159, attributed to the Jerusalem mint. Laureate head right of Melqart. Reverse: Eagle standing left; year above club in left field. BMC 204v. for monogram. Scattered marks on obverse and reverse; otherwise Choice Very Fine on a much larger and rounder flan than normally seen.

AD 33/34 is the year some Biblical historians have ascribed to the crucifixion of Jesus. Because this coin type is very likely the one to have been given to Judas Iscariot for his betrayal of Christ ("30 Pieces of Silver"), this date is the most desired of this lengthy series. It has become one of the central coins in any Biblical coin collection.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Lot 2196
Four Shekels of Tyre dated years 9, 30, 95 and 143. Condition averages Fine. Lot of 4 coins.

It's only when significant collections are offered that such a grouping of Tyrian shekels and halves can be seen in one place. Although the total cost was relatively not high to the collector, it is quite an accomplishment to garner so many different dates, especially those of year 159.
Estimated Value $450 - 550.

Collection Balance of the Shekels of Tyre type, including two Shekels, two Half Shekels and two bronzes. The coins are damaged and grade Fair-Good. Lot of 6 coins.

The consignor thought the bronzes to be possibly the central cores of fourrées, which seems most unlikely, as the shekels of Tyre were known thoughout the East for their purity of metal and full weight. They are the only coin type that the Jews would accept in payment for their Temple Tax.
