Thrace, Cherronesos, c. 400-350 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.44 g). Forepart of lion right, head reverted. Reverse: Quartered incuse with monogram and pellet in one quarter, barley ear in the other. Cf. BMC 22; cf. Grose 4110. Superb Extremely Fine. A wonderfully struck coin; exceptional.

The city of Cherronesos, itself a peninsula, was colonized by the Athenians in the 6th century BC.

This reverse type inspired the equally handsome pre-decimal pennies of Great Britain. Their large module lent themselves beautifully to the majesty of this design.

This particular obverse die seems to resemble Ariarathes of Cappadocia more than Alexander. Another example of this same obverse die can be found in our Pre-Long Beach Auction 2009, lot 1651.

An ethnic is the inscribed name of the city-state issuing the coin and, in fact, guarantees the weight and purity of metal.
